Hello,
My name is Simona and Im 30 years old.Im married of 2 years ago and...me and my husband we want very much a baby.Is it possible to have a baby if I have VHL?I did a surgery in 2005 to my head,in 2006 to my right kidney,I have tumours in my spinal cord,left kidney,pancreas...Is it possible to have a baby?Which are the risks?Please if u can help me with some informations i will appreciate.Thanks!
I am the mother of a young man with vhl and I would think that in vitro would be an option ,
In vitro is an option and becasuse the chances of passing the disease on is 50/50 it might be something to consider. Vhl is an awful disease, But every year doctors learn more and more. In my honest opinion I think there is nothing wrong with wanting a baby. My husband and I had 2 kids before he knew he had VHL and I am scared that they may have it too, but im glad they are here and I wouldnt change anything. My only concern with in vitro is you are trying to play god by using in vitro just to make sure your baby doesnt have it, and you dont know the ramifications of that, not to mention the costs and the fact that it may not even work. I would say do what you feel is right. If you want a baby have a baby, if you want to do it by in vitro do it! and if you decide to roll the dice and your baby does have VHL its ok too.
Thanks for your advices,i really wanna a baby but tell me something if i will have troubles, if i have baby,if i will die cuz the blood pressure will be high during the pregnancy and i dont wanna risk my life and let my husband with a baby.So,if i will be pregnant everything will be ok with me?im just asking you cuz...anyway ...this thing I must to talk with my doctors.Thanks again!
I thought invitro would sort out the healthy sperm and egg connection. I hope you think that |I am not being compassionate about this b ut what other options are there than the "GAMBLE" And you are so right cherish your kids and adore them and keep on having more, Good Luck
In my opinion, if you want to have a baby then you should get a complete VHL screening to make sure you have no VHL issues going on that will need to be taken care of before you get pregnant or monitored during the pregnacy. Also rule out Pheochromocytoa's which can cause serious complication (including high blood pressure) to you during a pregnacy.

Having children, whether you have VHL or not, is an intensely personal choice. It is between you and your husband. The only thing I would advise is make sure you are healthy: take care of any tumors that need to be taken care of, and especially check for pheos (24 hour urine collection test). I have VHL and was able to have two daughters "in between" tumors. The only precaution we took was to have an assisted delivery (we originally planned a C-Section but my daughter came early and too fast for the surgery); we used the vacuum and I did not bare down or push at all. This was to prevent pressure on spinal or brain tumors. I have two beautiful, special daughters. I LOVE being a mom. If you have this desire, it is definitely worth pursuing. Again, this is up to you--just take care of yourself.
