There is now a generic Keppra. Has anyone experienced increased seizures under the generic substitute?
In case you don't know what it is (I didn't):
Keppra (KEH-pruh)
A drug used to treat seizures (involuntary muscle movements) caused by epilepsy (a group of brain disorders). Keppra is being studied in the treatment of seizures in patients with cancer that has spread to the brain. It is a type of anticonvulsant. Also called levetiracetam.
My husband has been on Keppra for a couple of years now. He takes it along with his Dilantin. He hasn't had a seizure since he started on Keppra. Since there is now a generic equivalent, I am trying to find out if it is as effective as the trade name medication. Does anyone have any experience with the generic medication? Nerfmom
My husband has only had one seizure. He was put on a seizure medicine and when he participated in the clinical trial for Sutent the neurologist switched him to Keppra. He's been taking the generic now. Since he's been seizure free anyway we are probably not a good "sample" for your inquiry. But, I did want you to know that for him the switch from Keppra to the generic has gone smoothly.
Thank you so much for the reply. Since out insurance company mail order pharmacy does not charge for generic medication, it would be great if my husband remains seizure free on the generic Keppra. We are low income seniors and any cost saving plans are helpful to us. His Neurologist wants him to stay on the brand name Dilantin, which we buy from our local pharmacy.
It has been so wonderful that my husband has been seizure free for so long. Nerfmom
