has anyone tried acupunture to aid in recovery from surgery or radiation treatment?
I use acupuncture regularly both as a tool in recovery from surgery and just as a regular "tune-up".
According to chinese medicine, when we have surgery, the surgeon has to cut through the normal "meridians" or lines through which the "electrical" signals of "chi" normally flow, keeping our bodies in balance. Acupuncture can be used to speed healing (by bringing more blood to the wound site) and by knitting those meridians back together.
I would not use it near the site of radiation treatment, as increased blood flow there might not be the thing. But it should be great for the muscle aches that go with being in bed for a long time, or limping and therefore causing your healthy muscles to be out of balance.
In short, it's not specific, but it might make you feel better. Be sure to work with a medically qualified practitioner (a doctor who does acupuncture) so that they will understand your medical condition.
Best wishes,
Joyce
Someone very close to me has VHL and he has tried a number of different options for combating pain. Acupuncture did not seem to work for him, but I have heard that it has helped others. Here's what he said about it:
"Here's my only take on it. I tried it 4 times. I'm really not certain if my practitioner had a good handle on it or not. I was completely relaxed during the therapy and even fell asleep. But for whatever reason, maybe just coincidence, I always seemed to have more pain the next day, and that's why I quit...."
I am curiuios to know if chineses herbs or acupuncture couild help with growth of present tumors of specially in the eye//
hI, Pupa. My experience with acupuncture for pain is that it helps release toxins from the muscles into the bloodstream. You need to drink LOTS OF WATER to clear those toxins out of the body. If you do, it will alleviate pain. If not, the toxins settle back into the muscles, and it can be worse the next day.
And it doesn't work for everything.
Best wishes,
Joyce
Acupuncture won't alleviate tumors but it has sure helped me in the last ten years with sinus pain. Since I have vhl my immune system is challenged. I catch some kind of virus every month. (I teach in a middle school.) As soon as I start to feel sick I call my homeopathic Dr. Usually I can knock it out in about two days. Chinese medicine and acupuncture enable me to keep my job and make this disease somewhat tolerable.
Follow-on for Pupa. I spoke with a friend who is an acupuncturist. She says that you should not be feeling pain the following day. She suggests you try Japanese acupuncture rather than Chinese -- they do not go as deeply with the needles, and it should be more comfortable.
She has agreed to do a show with me at some point, so thanks for the show idea!
Best wishes,
Joyce
