Dr. Oldfield

0 Recommendations

I was wondering if any of you have had brain surgery with Dr. Ed. Oldfield. I am going to see him soon as I have a hemangiomablastoma on my right cerebellar.
I have been reading some of the on line ratings of which he received very poor scores. I know that a lot of folks will just use these to let off steam, but this was a malpractice/death situation and sounded awful. I know he is the foremost authority on hemangiomablastoma, but have any of you actually used him as a surgeon. This is my first CNS tumor (my others being all abdominal issues) and I don't know who is the best to go to. I have met with one neurosurgeon that has done hemangiomablastomas but not very knowledgeable about VHL, Can any one give me their two cents on this issue. As you can probably tell I am afraid.

He was one of my two doctors who preformed my craniotomies for my VHL related hemangioblastomas at NIH. I thought he was wonderful. I had absolutly no problems with him or his staff. People do use those rating sites to blow off stem for any reason, even something as small as they want a Rx and the doctor won't give them one so they say all sorts of awefull things.

Dr. Oldfield has performed two very difficult spinal cord surgeries on me. He was fantastic. If I had gone with any other neurosurgeon, I'm sure taht it would be paralyzed--my tumors were in the middle of my spinal cord. The man is brilliant. Neurosurgeons don't always have the best bedside manner, but when it comes down to it, I just want a brilliant surgeon. I think that you are in very good hands. If I had another brain or spinal cord tumor, Dr. Oldfield would be my first choice.

I had two spine surgeries, One with Pro Brotchi in Belguim and the other with Dr Robert Spetzler at St Joseph in Phoenix Az/ Who I would highly recommend Take your time and do your research ask tons of questions. mine went really well Thank god

Dr. Oldfield and Dr. Lonzer at NIH performed surgery for a tumor on my husband's optic nerve. It went very well, and the risk factors were high. We would agree that maybe the bedside manner is a bit brusque, but the surgery and follow-up were great.

He sounds fantastic!!! Surgeons are not known for their bedside manner..... My guy came to me before my adrenalectomy and said "There is a 50% chance you will die on the operating table tomorrow". After I started crying, he said "But I am the best so you will be fine". And you know what? I was and I am.

Three of my seven brain surgeries were performed by Dr. Oldfield. He has "gifted hands" and I was healed through them. His bedside manner is just fine and he was confident and reassuring, which is huge for me. A few years ago, a resident shared that when he's in Europe, he gets a rock star's reception! I had two more brain surgeries at NIH in the latter part of 2008. I'm still walking and talking so I'd say they were a success, performed by Dr. Lonser and team. I have only good things to say about all my surgeons...

Thank you all so much for responding. I have talked with his NP and everyone has been so nice. You have all given me the confidence I need to co forward.
My surgery is scheduled for April 3rd at UVA with Dr. Oldfield. I would appreciate your prayers.
I pray for all of us as a group when I don't know of a specific need.
Thanks for being there for me.
Hugs.

Kathy,
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Dr. Oldfield is now in charge of my son's care. And we think the world of him, and the entire UVA system, and the other specialists he has seen here. My son had a massive cerebellar hemangio removed a few years ago by a wonderful team (Neuro Associates in Richmond - Dr. Peter Alexander and his staff) and then had lesions also removed by cyberknife under their care. When it was determined that there were spinal cysts Dr. Alexander said he thought that Dr. Oldfield would be better to oversee my son's long term care and become his surgeon if necessary. We have the utmost of confidence in him, and I have done a lot of reading about Dr. Oldfield and his work at NIH. I think you are in really really good hands....
I live near Charlottesville and if there is anything I can do for you while you are here, please let me know.
You can email me directly at albatten@aol.com.
We actually have followups set to see Dr. O in May.
Hugs,
Amy

Dr.Oldfield is by far the best neurosurgeon that my husband has had..& Lord knows that he has has his share of CNS surgeries. He has always had great bedside manners, & has always been compassionate towards my husband & our family.
We highly recommend Dr. Oldfield!!!

Hi all!
I just came upon this site, and it has been great. I have a tumor near the optic nerve likely to be removed soon. Would love to chat with anyone who has undergone a similar experience. Incision --> 5-6 inches behind the hairline. thanks!

Hi,
On your surgery performed by Dr. Spetzler, where on the spine was it located? I had him do a C-1 hemangio and he is the best but I have others lower on the spine and wondered if he does them or has some one else do the lower cord surgeries. I was told he only does the ones involving the brain, ?? So if you can, please let me know about your history with him. Thanks.

Dr Spetzler performed surgery c1 and he is superb, the year before surgery was c4-7 performed by Pro Brotchi and that went well also.
