dizzyness after brain surgery

2 Recommendations

hi there, I had a cerebellar hemangioblastoma removed on the 29th june this year. i spent 4 days in hospital and then they sent me home with some paracetamol! i recovered fairly quickly from the surgery and had no problems or complications at all. two weeks after the surgery i woke in the morning feeling very dizzy and very sick. i spoke to my doctor who gave me some tablets to help with the sickness and advised plenty of rest. two weeks after this i was re-admitted to hospital and sent for an MRI. the scan showed swelling on the cerebella where the tumor was removed and it was decided to treat this with steroids (dexamethasone). within 4 days the right side of my face had doubled in size and my jaw was locked shut. they rushed me down to surgery suspecting an absess under my lower wisdom tooth, but once they had drained some fluid off and removed the tooth they discovered there was no absess. the swelling in my face was caused by an infection in the back of my throat, the steroids had fed this infection and made everything 10 times worse. the surgeon and his team were very unsure about what had caused this but did say that the infection could have been conected to my previous brain surgery. i spent a further 5 days on intensive care and then 2 days on another ward before coming home. the dizzyness that i had still remains and it seems that no one can give me a straight answer. what i want to know is: 1)will the dizzyness go away? 2)was it the infection that caused the swelling on my brain? and 3)is there anything i can do to help reduce the dizzy, sicky feeling? I'm hoping that someone out there knows the answer or has had these symptoms after brain surgery, so if you have any ideas guys please let me know.

Hi there oddmanout I had bi lateral cerebellar hemangioblastoma’s removed in 2006 I was dizzy before the operation which is how we found out about the tumours. I was the same as you home in about four days and back to work within the week. I did have some dizzy spells for two to three weeks after the operation but thank god no infections. I found that I would vomit for no reason at all, with no warning for several months after surgery, recommend no restaurants for a while. I was told that this part of the brain has something to do with balance and senses. Take care of yourself

hi oddmanout,
i had a hemangioblastoma on the cerebellum and on the brainstem removed in 1997. my father also had the same tumors when he was young. the dizziness improves with time, and as my dad said, it takes years. i learned to make adjustments--avoid tilting head back to look skyward, no sudden twisting or turning of the head, avoid turning of head while walking, and avoid laying flat without pillows. this has helped and improvement can take years. good luck.

I had surgery on a 3cm by 2 by 2 cm, hemangioma
on my right cerebellar. The last surgery being the 25th of June. The first surgery for it was on the 3rd of April and because of the swelling I was on the table for 22hours. They (Dr,Oldfield and his team) cpuldn't get it all thus the 2nd surgery onthe 25th,
With the 1st surgery I had the ususal 6 week recovery. With the second surgery, however, I've experienced dizziness.
It has been over 2 months now so I expected it too go away but it hasn/t, I am going to an ENT doctor. He thinks it can be the scar tissue.
I will let you know if physical therapy helps. Dr. Oldfield didn't seemed to know about this symptom. Oh by the way I was only at UVA for the last surgery 2 days

Yes, after i had brain surgery, i did not experience dizziness, but VERTIGO, which is much worse! My house was spinning and i could not stop vommitting a few months after the surgery.

I ended up in the hospital, was told i had labrynthitis. That whole experience of vertigo makes me super afraid to ever have brain surgery again.

hi,
I had a pitutary adanoma, it was about 18 cm at last measurement, they removed it all aug 14 this year,
The pitutary controls all glands ect in your body,
I also now get dizzy and I now have sinus infections,
Drainage,ect.
The doc went in through my nose and used a new procedure to repair my nose,I don't know why I am getting dizzy, but I am told it's the brain getting use to the shock, but I think it's fighting some infections that are still present,a way to tell is your body temp,so take your temp 2 or 3 times a day and see if it's up,I also still get brain freeze headaches not as bad as in the hospital,I had it there for 6 days, they had me on morphine but I was still in pain,I couldn't move my head without almost passing out, that's better now,I was told it takes 6 months or more before your system is equal again, and I was also told you'll NEVER be the same as you were before,I know this isn't great news but.it's just my story, john hopkins has alot of info too,
Good luck,I hope you get better!
