I am always open to alternative medicine and herbal medicine has been around the longest. I agree with Wilson and Joyce to make sure your doctors are aware of what you are doing and that you go to a very knowledgeable Chinese doctor before trying any herbal medicine. Anyone with adrenal/kidney disease
or high blood pressure must be VERY careful with herbs, I have decided against it as I am without adrenal glands and my body is on a careful regimen of prescribed medication. Our kidneys and our adrenal glands are VERY important in blood pressure regulation and some herbs (like black licorice root) can raise our blood pressure to a dangerous level. My doctor at a very large medical center in Los Angeles was quite unaware of this when I was trying some herbs several years ago. So my advice, BE VERY CAREFUL.
Blessings,
Tina

Terrific, Wilson! Thank you.

For anyone not familiar with the acronym, PRC = People's Republic of China (mainland China).

Best wishes,
Joyce

Good point.
I stopped to take all herbs and medicine, seven days before my surgery. Some chinese herbs, such as ginseng, will increase blood flow which is very dangereous for surgery.

As i said. MUST consult a qualified chinese doctor before taking multi- recipe herb ( 2 or more defference herb or CAM using together ) treatment.

today, I have talk to a CEO of the largest anti-tumour website in PRC. I've proposed to set up a Chinese VHL group. He seem to be very interesting about this.
I will see him again in Beijing next week I. will keep you informed.

For those of you ready to rush out and buy something at the health food store, please listen to the current show at powerfulpatient.org. Americans spend an enormous amount of money on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), but usually without the thought and analysis that Wilson is urging here.

It is best to ANALYZE your situation first, to determine what you NEED, not just take herb-of-the-week as recommended in some magazine.

It is also CRITICAL to tell your doctor -- even if you don't normally discuss this with your general practitionery, you MUST tell the surgeon and the anesthesiologist at least several days before any surgery. Why early? Because you may need to discontinue some medicines -- including aspirin and tylenol -- for several days before surgery.

There is a very good article at WebMD about this problem. More than 70% of Americans take CAM and don't tell their doctors. This is a very risky thing to be doing. I'm not saying that the CAM is bad -- it might be very good -- but that it might also interact in the wrong way with prescription or over-the-counter medicines, or with other herbs you are taking, or with the anesthesia during surgery.
