Charlotte, North Carolina or Knoxville, Tennessee

I am new to this website and fairly new to VHL, so I am needing all the help I can get right now!

I am trying to decide between 2 grad schools, one in Charlotte, NC and the other in Knoxville, Tenn. One of the major deciding factors for me will be care I can receive in each place for VHL.

I am not currently hooked up with anyone but an opthamologist, so I will pretty much be starting from scratch. My initial primary goal will be to find a genetic counselor to discuss VHL with, but I will need all the other doctors as well.

If there is anyone out there who can suggest a good set of doctors to me in either of those places, I would be extremely grateful! Also, if you have suggestions on finding a good doctor or geneticist, I would appreciate that advice as well. I know some basics, but it is always good to hear information reiterated.

Thanks again!

I am also new to VHL and I live in Charlotte NC. I talked with a very good genetic counselor at Carolina's Medical Center, Lisa Amacker North. She was able to help explain VHL a little better for me and also suggest how to begin the screening test process (since my doctor did not know anything about VHL) and I am the first in my family to be diagnosed - I have a retinal angioma.

There is a family here in Charlotte that has a pretty extensive history with VHL. Lisa gave me their name and phone number but I don't have their name in front of me right now. I could send that to you if you would like - just send me an email (lmhorsky@carolina.rr.com). They would probably have better info as far as doctor's in the area.

Good luck in grad school. Out of curiosity what school are you looking at in Charlotte?

Laura

Be sure to get the permission of the family in Charlotte before giving out their name. It's just a courtesy.

And be sure NOT to post it in this list. No one's personal details should be posted here. This list is searched by the search engines, so it's much too public. That's why there is a provision for private messages through the Members section.

Best wishes,
Joyce
