What I am doing here is trying to document our families journey with cancer that began right before halloween 2007.My Husband(Dave)was diagnosed with throat cancer at the age of 49.He was stage 4 when diagnosed. One of the most aggressive type of head and neck cancer there was Squamas cell carcinoma.
In the beginning they talked like they really thought they could cure this,we were at a very Reputable cancer center in Louisville ,so we had every belief that they could cure him.So On Our youngest Daughters 18th birthday(I Will come back to this later)he started his first chemo Cistplatin and eurbutuxfor 8 weeks .Scans soon after the 8 wks showed the tumor wasnt shrinking so then we had to do new chemo and radiation for months twice a day traveling back and forth.I was still working full time at that point,David tried to go back to work but to many treatments etc,he had to go on disability leave.
In febuary 2008,they felt like they could do surgery and get the rest of it out that way.So They took out one tumor(all on the left side of the neck)called a complete neck dissection, along with the one tumor, they took 42 lymph nodes, the jugular vein and mass muscle around the left neck and shoulder. This left him to where he couldnt turn his head from side to side and had NO strength in his left arm.P E T scan 3 months later in May 08 revealed a new tumor, same spot,so once again they felt like they could get all of it AGAIN this time.So more major throat surgery in may 08,taking out the "nodule) and a few more lymph nodes. Now because of so much damage to his throat ,he would not be a canadit for surgery again. So more very harsh chemo treatments began.every 21 days for what they cal T.I.P.P for 4 sessions.Mid way through scan showed yet another tumor that had attatched itself to the caratoid artery(not good)So they continued chemo.Numerous problems began popping up the whole year.evert time he had chemo, his blood counts would drop and he would get severly ill,and back to the hospital we kept going, all the while no matter how sick he has become,he has fought it hard. Now we have found out that the tumor is once again growing,so we are going to try a chemo called methatrexate once a week for a month the go for a scan to see how things are going. He is in so much pain he cant leave the house and its been that way the whole time,so we may be calling hospice soon for pain control. He is now only 50 years old and has lost over 85 lbs.I welcome any comments as I plan to keep all of this and give it to our children one day, also i forgot to add he has had a feeding tube since Jan 2009.he cant swallow anything at all
