irregular heartbeats

0 Recommendations

I am 26 years old and have been suffering from irregular heartbeats. One time 3 years ago I walked down the street and my heart kept on fluttering like a butterfly flapping it's wings real fast and usually that happens to me it goes away after like 5 seconds or so but these lasted for like a minute....I couldn't catch my breath and so I dropped to my knees in the middle of the road, I had almost passed out, it seemed like my heart was so erratic that I was going to pass out. I started praying and crying to god to let me live. I got back home and tried not to think about it but my heart beat did that to me for like 2 hours . I did not want to call 911 because the last time that I called them for the same reason they didn't beleive me and told me that no one could feel there heart do that and they thought that I was making it up or insane. I still have arrythmias about 5-8 times a week. Weither I drink or do anything else it still causes me discomfort and stress because the arrythmia causes me to freak out and have a panic attack wich causes my heart beat to be worse. I was just wandering if there was any one else out there in this world that has the same symptoms as me and struggles with this THING everyday like I do...it sucks and I don't have that kind of money to see a specialist of cardiology or heart specialist so I have to live with this and have been for 5 years not

In response to the 26 year old with irregular heartbeats: I found your posting this morning after waking up with very rapid heartbeats. I am a 53 year old male who has been living with this occasional condition for as far back in my childhood as I can remember. It has never made me panicky unless it lasts for more than just a few minutes. This morning it did last longer and this is the first time it ever woke me up. My heart seems to be strong and healthy for some one who gets limited excersize. I do not have high blood pressure. After living with this for so many years it is time to find out what is going on. I tend to believe it is nothing to be alarmed about; but, I can't find a lot of information about it and it doesn't seem to be as common as I once thought it might be, I just assumed that this happened to everybody. I hope that this does not mean that the other ones who experience this are not around to talk about it! Sorry if that bothers you...my feeble attempt at humor. Hope we find out why this happens. When I learn more I will post it. Thanks - Rex

After rereading your letter and researching some websites I would say that your condition might be different than mine. Check out this website that does a good job of explaining the causes and effects: http://www.ehealthmd.com/library/palpitations/PAL_disturb.html

Also, do a google search about "Irregular heartbeats". There is a wealth of information out there. Be honest with yourself about caffeine, alchohol and drug use. And remember tthat your heart is a pretty big priority. A doctor or nutritionist might give you some good advice that could save your life. Good luck - Rex

Are you sure the fluttering heart is causing the panic attack? Or could the panic attack be the cause of the fluttering heart? Both of my daughters suffer from this, but the younger one, age 21, also has bouts of irregular heartbeat caused by atrial fibrillation, as does her father.
Atrial fibrillation, also known as A-fib, is fairly common and not usually serious unless it goes on for days. My daughter's doctor said many teenagers have it and don't even notice it. It's difficult to diagnose unless you can get on a heart monitor while it's actually occurring. If you have a home blood pressure kit with an audible beep, you can make a tape recording to take to a doctor. It's something to check into, but not to be frightened about.

I know that saying that it is no biggie, it is still a big deal to you. I have had a fast heart and irregular heart beat since I was two years old. I am now almost 25. I was okay without medication until I was about 20. Now, I am on Toprol which keeps my heart at a normal rate, and stops the arythmia. The Toprol works so great, and it is the BEST thing for it. As for the panic attacks, I do have those as well, but with my anxiety medication and the toprol it only lasts a couple of minutes. However, since you do probably drive and you go places, you need to maybe go to a free health clinic or something of that sort. If you have any questions you want to ask me, I have been dealing with this literally my whole life, so feel free to email me. mikesbelle@yahoo.com Good Luck, Katie

Many things can cause your heart to beat more rapidly are you drinking a lot of coffee or energy drinks??? Some medicines will cause your heart to beat more rapidly, ( tachycardia)... I urge you to go see someone before you have real damage to your heart. I know that you are young but things happen to young people too... I am old enough to be your MOM, please listen... take care J

I wouldn't just live with these symptoms. You should look into this further. Could be something simple as too much caffine or even a food allergy. But it could be a heart condition like MVP or something along that line. They have meds to treat these conditions. Also if your blood count is low or off it can cause a racing heart beat and dizziness too and not be heart related. Start with your family doctor and see what he/she suggests. Good luck.

I have had irregular heart beats for years. I had a defective aorta heart valve which they replaced.
I still have some irregular heart beats so they installed a pacemaker. I advise you to see a cardiologist. Not all the solutions to irregular heart beat are costly. In my case I am over 65 so medicare covered all my costs which were very high.

May the Lord Bless you.

I am 28 years old and also have irregular heartbeats, my cardiologist just prescribed to me Toprol i was alittle nervous about taking this prescription but after reading your comment on how it has really helped i am feeling less anxious. I was just wondering if your doctor has ever told you that you have pvc's, because this is what they are diagnosing me with. Thanks crystal

Your condition is most likley a supraventricular tachycardia or SVT. you need to see a physician who specializes in cardiac electrophysiology. This can be treated and cured with an invasive procedure called an ablation. trust me, this is what I do for a living.

the link above should allow you to search the heart rhythm society database for qualified electrophysiologists. Good luck.

It is quite possible you are just having panic attacks. The symptoms of panic attack are real and frightening. I have had panic disorder for many years and now manage it with medication and sensible lifestyle, I still have the odd one, and they can be so intense I've felt like phoning an ambulance and in the past I have...the heart races and bets irregularly, sweating, feeling sick and clammy etc, a low dose of betablockers can be effective in breaking that cycle and calming the heart. Your GP should be able to refer you to a heart specialist as to rule out any heart condition, and also just check your heart in his/her practice. Someone once told me I probably had a dangerous heart condition...which immediately created a full fledged panic attack! Not the best thing to suggest to us anxiety prone!

I'm not a doctor but my wife had the same problem and she tried everything the doctor could give her. Finally she had a pacemaker put in and a AV node ablaition
She has been fine ever since.
