When I begin walking, my left hip does not hurt. After walking about 50 yards, the hip is so painful I have to sit for a couple of minutes. When I begin walking after sitting for two minutes, it feels wonderful....no pain what-so-ever until I've walked about 50 yards. When standing, it will eventually begin hurting. I do not have sciatica, spinal stenosis, arthritis, or any artery blockages. I had a degenerative disk between lumbar 4 & 5 but that was successfully repaired. All possible tests, including several MRI's and dozens of x-rays show that I do not have any of those I've listed. Yet, I have incapacitating pain when I walk. Any ideas why? Percacet (oxycodone) does not even dull the pain. I'm becoming quite discouraged. Thanks, Ron

Ron,
Are you taking statin drugs (ei; lipitor) for chloresteral? That is one of the side effects besides liver damage. I went to a doctor for over a year and kept asking if it could be from the meds and he assured me about every three months that it was not from that. Finally I quit taking them for a couple days because the pain was so intense and became desperate. 36 hours later, the pain went away and never came back. The next time I went to see this doctor, he asked if I was still on all my meds. I told him yes, everything except the lipitor. He queried me as to why I stopped talking vit and I told him that the pain he could not relieve in my leg was unbearable. It seemed that if I quit taking it for a few days and the pain went away, my suspisions we right and he was wrong. Since the pain went away, I was right.

Is the pain actually in your hip or the middle of your butt cheek? Do you get this pain if you sit for any length of time? I had suspected herniation of 3 discs in my back. I had therapy. Then I was left with pain similar to what you are describing. I had every test done and nothing showed up. I was finally diagnosed (after 3 yrs) with Piriformis Syndrome. The Piriformis muscle is a small muscle between the groin and the glutes. It sits on the pelvic floor. When inflammed, it can pinch the sciatica or as I found out, other nerves. I do get sciatica occassionally, but the pain in my hip area is definitely not sciatica. It feels like someone is stabbing me in the groin and the knife is coming out my cheek. The longer I walk the worse it gets, the longer I sit, the worse it gets. Best position is laying down. If this is your problem, there is hope. You need exercise, believe it or not. I could barely walk one block. Now I am walking over 10 blocks. I'm off my pain meds except occassional Tylenol #3(which couldn't touch it before). Check with a Pain Specialist and mention it. If that is it, physio does work. Hope this helps.

i also have hip pain, but mine is constant. I have had physical therapy for 2 years and it has done nothing. I have had MRI's, bone scans, x-rays, and cortizone (sp?) shots and none of it has done any good. I have had to quit dancing, running and marching band. My doctor doesn't know why it hurts like this. I don't know what to tell you about your hip, but I wanted you to know that you're not the only one.

Not saying your pain is the same as mine, but my pain is constant as well, just undercontrol know where I can deal with it. Piriformis Syndrome is very rare or not well known yet. In other words, there are people with it, but many doctors have not even heard of it yet. I had regular physio at first that actually made it worse. Right after I had physio for my back. This physio was actually recommended by one of the NHL team doctors. It took me many doctors from neurologists to my last one who is a pain specialist to figure it out. This specialist recommended physio for the pelvic floor which actually helped. Even though your pain could be something totally different than mine, I would recommend a pain specialist doctor. They actually study all kinds of pain in different people and different parts of the body. They may help you.

If you have degenerative disk desease, then good chance you may have something
in your hip, or some form of arthritis, or even something like a spur or calcium deposit.
It may not be bad enough to be found by your doctor. Have you had any hip x-rays, or
CT scans?

I was so please when I came across your posting today. I to have the exact symptom. I can walk 50 -100 feet have severe pain and have to rest. It has gotten increasingly worse this past year. It has effected my quality of life for all the activities I used to enjoy I no longer can participate. I recently had an arterial flow study for the doctor was certain I have a blockage but nothing showed. I hope that through you or these posting we can find the cause and cure.

do your legs turn purple if you stand or sit with legs hanging for any length of time? Mine did. They thought circulation. I had doppler, nothing. Then they thought pelvis or abdomenal...CT Scans, Ultra sounds....nothing...MRI's for back...nothing...you name the test...nothing. It felt like someone was stabbing me in the groin and knife coming out cheek. Then someone tied an elastic around my hip and my legs would go numb. Nothing showed up anywhere. Finally, as I said in my previous post, a pain specialist figured out it was my piriformis muscle. This is a small muscle between the groin and the butt muscles. When inflammed it presses on nerves, usually sciatica, but in my case, also femeral arterery and nerve. (main ones down the thigh..sorry about medical terms, but was also a RN). Again, my suggestion....go to a Pain Specialist. They can help figure out the cause.

I just read your comment about hip pain when walking and stopping the statin drugs. I have the same problem that you did, did you stay off the statins or resume them ?

I had the same exact symptoms-stabbing pain in the right groin, only when walking, and only intermittantly. I would walk completely pain free for a few steps, then, ZING-a stabbing, knife-like pain in the groin, and I would have to grab onto something. It was so severe, I was on crutches for two weeks, went to the ER, had a hip x-ray, saw a surgeon because I was told it may be a hernia (it wasn't). An orthopedic surgeon sent me for an MRI, which came back showing only arthritis! Well this pain is not arthritis-like. It feels more nerve-like. I have also been to a chiropractor and had massage. Nobody can tell me what is wrong.
I actually believe it is related to Lipitor, because of the time line of symptoms. Every doctor has told me there is absolutely no connection, but I have been off the drug for three weeks now, and the pain is completely gone. I had the symptoms for three months prior to going off the statin.
I hope this helps some of you who can't find the reason for your pain.

I know this post from Ron4 is an old post, but for me it is still actuall.
Anyone out there knows if Ron4 ever find a cure or the answer for his "Pain only when walking about 50 yards".
onesided pain on hip area. Not stabbing pain in the groin. just excruciating pain on one side. After resting a couple of minutes it vanish completely, to come back after a short distance of walking. No pain when sitting, sleeping or resting. ONLY AFTER WALKING A SHORT DISTANCE. I have ecxactly the same for over three months now. bloodtests, x rays, mri and other scans do not reveal any thing.

Roi I really wish I knew if Ron4 ever found any relief. My pain is exactly how you described yours. It is the strangest thing and it is getting to be more frequent than not. Please let me know if you find out anything.

Most docs view conditions thru a narrow widow. Look into NMN. It is like an MRI except that it sees the nerves. Piriformis syndrome is not something physicians easily recognize or diagnose. You might have to pick up the tab for the scan yourself cause most insurance companies would rather have you on disability and narcotics then help anyone but themselves.

same problems for me....must be the air or something...I have severe arthritis in rt. hip; had back surgery in July for pinched nerves and then hip went...using a walker to walk...this is not fun.....
Lipitor was terrible.....terrible pain in muscles and joints; urine turned brown...enough of that...never again will I take a statin!!

I have had this pain in the hip for about a month now. I went to the Grand Canyon and had to carry my son and walk. It all started from there. I havent been hurt at all, but after i came back, that area has been stiff. And after some time, there has been some pain on the left side of the hip, sometimes a buring sensation. I had my x-ray taken but nothing came out. But the same day, after my x-ray, i was slipping my pants on when i had a really bad pain in the back of the hip. I got fine in about 3-4 days from that.....now that pain is gone but when i stand or walk for about 50-100 yards, the hips pain on the sides/hinges. But if i am not walking too much, i dont even know if i have a problem. Also i cannot take any sudden movements on the hip. Really scared if i have a slip disc or a disc bulge. Any ideas what this might be. I have been taking some spasm medicines for about 15 days now. I did have a little pain in my right leg for about a day or two but since then ...not been there. Any ideas ?
