My son has acute asthma. He has had it all his life but since puberty it is extremely bad impacting his quality of life. The only relief he has is when he receives a steroid treatment followed by a maintenance does. Three years ago Dr Long of Mass General Hospital in Boston put him on Xolar. Everything changed it was like a miracle drug. He was able to reduce his Advair, allergy medication even his ant-acid.

Then last year it just stopped working?? He is off it now and back in trouble.

What can we do? No one seems to have an answer. They say that they can’t re-test his IEG

What is he allergic to?

Read the book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj. It will change your perspective and maybe his life!

How much Xolair was your son on, they can give up to 3 shots a month. They usually won't retest as the level is usually the same but the Xolair binds to the IGE. They just need to up the dose. If your MD is at Mass General then your son is probably in the best hands possible or was he just there for admission? You might want to try an allergist, I wish you luck.

He was being seen by Dr. Long (MAss General) on an ongoing basis. I’m not sure of the dose but he received one shot a month. Upping the dose was discussed but the does he was taken was tied to his IGE level so they would not increase his dose?? Do you know if less more often is better than just one does a month? It worked so well for the first year and them he went of to school in Maine and it seamed to just stop working. (we live in MA)

Sounds as though his triggers may have changed when he moved for school. I initially did really well for about 8months on only one shot a month( 150mg) but I live in a very agricultural area and there are times of the year when they are out getting cotton off the plants or almonds off the trees. At those time of the year I started to suffer and my MD upped my dose. I now get 2 shots (300mg) on the same day of the month. I am not certain that the research has shown much difference as to the efficacy of getting one shot every 2 weeks vs getting 2 shots once per month. but I have met several Xolair patients at different information sessions that get 2-3 shots and once on the drug your IGE dose not usually change, but your exposure to irritants may certainly cause you to need more of it.

Hi, I am a 45 yr. old female with longterm asthma. I have been on xolair for 3 years. It worked like a gem until this past August. I was prettty much off all other meds including singulair and a small arsenal of inhalers. It now seems to have stopped working at all, but as with everything, it could be relative... maybe I'd be worse with out it. My doctor says he has seen this happen with several other of his patients. It's very dissappointing! He is encouraging me to go back to being more diligent with traditional allergy shots, as they are actually a potential cure. I haven't made a decision about going off xolair yet, because I'm still a teeny bit hopeful that something else maybe going on making my asthma act up right now.

I know many traditional doctor's poo poo it, but does your son have any food sensitivities? I have found that even though I don't skin test positive for milk and gluten that I generally do better keeping consumption of them, plus sugar to a minimum. I have messed up sinsuses too though and I know your son may be totally different. I empathize completely with your son's and your situation! Good luck!

I too have acute asthma and i end up in the hospital what seems like every other month My Doctor is with Illinois Heart and Lung He is a dam good Doctor I really believe in him and cant thank him enough for all he has done for me Also my primary Doctor has been wonderful to me and he also knows when I call I am in trouble I was takomg zolair and believe it or not I didnt have any where the trouble I have now The problem with me and my medicare is that they dont approve the drug any longer due to no one in town willing to have it shipped to them and I recive my shots every 2 weeks from them I use to give myself the shots I also use to get the medication from fed ex Now I cant get anyone or anything to help me out so I due with out and I am paying for it Life is rough enough having asthma But not knowing when or if I get sick again am I gonna pull through Predasone is a pain in the but I take it every day and now I also take medicine for diabetes I wasnt diabetic before but now I am I also worry if a mere 10 mg tablet can do this what about when I get sick and end up in the hospital again The steroids get upped and so does my sugar levels what about a stroke? And I also worry about if my body gets immuned to it What then? I absolutely hate what steroids have done to me Why cant the retest your son for zolair again? They give us this drug and it does miracles and in my case they take it away from me and your son developed an allergy to it Man I will Pray for you and your son I wish you the best Take care

It is somewhat disheartening to hear that so many of you have had Xolair stop working. I was on Allergy shots as a kid before I developed asthma but now have severe latex allergies which started my asthma to begin with. I tried allergy shots when I initially had symtoms but the MD could not make serum completely latex free and I reacted to that as well. I do fairly well with the Xolair and the other meds I am on but the summers are not pleasant and I can't imagine where I would be without my Xolair. Back on prednisone and in and out of the hospital.
