Fasting blood tests or not fasting?

0 Recommendations

When your children were tested had they been fasting for any length of time? Dr. Raymond mentioned fasting blood test in his reply to me. Our son had not been fasting at the time of his initial test, which was inconclusive. Our doctor finally called us to schedule the retest, but I'm not sure if he gave directions for him to be fasting for any length of time. My huband took the call, so I'm not sure. I'm going to call him now to ask, but just wondered what everyone else had done.

If the test you are referring to is the VLCFA test, then, yes, it should be obtained after an overnight fast. That means nothing after midnight the night before (or allow 6-8 hours since last meal), except for clear liquids as necessary.

If it's a test for ACTH then, you don't need to fast.

It is the VLCFA test. He did say to fast this time. Our son eats A LOT of peanut butter, too, which I'm now reading could alter the results. I really think our doctor does not know what he's doing.
