My 82 year old mother is scheduled to have her thyroid removed end of July. She has seen a Head & Neck surgeon at a major cancer center where she is being treated for bladder cancer. He has reviewed her MRIs and Ultrasounds. She has a large thyroid, multi-nodules. He does not feel needle biopsies will be conculsive and, due to the size, it should come out even if it is benign as it is starting to grow under the breast bone. We have a consult with an endocrinologist scheduled for next week. I don't want her to suffer the risk and pain of surgery if there is some treatment that will shrink the thyroid.
What is the experience of others?
