My husband has just been diagnosised with hyperthryoidism and we are trying to figure out the best course of action. We were recommended two treatment options: radioactive iodine treament or surgery. Has anyone done the iodine treament and could they tell me more about it.

Hyperthyroidism Synthroid Surgery Graves' disease

Hello, I had RAI in August due to having hyperthyroidism (Graves Disease) to be exact. My Endocrinologist gave me a low iodine diet I had to follow a month before I had the RAI done. I had mine done right at my doctors office. They gave me a pill which is rather large and I had to drink a cup full of water to swallow it. It takes about 6 weeks for the thyroid to be destroyed and then you go on Synthroid or whatever thyroid medication the doctor gives you. There are so many types. I take Synthroid 75mcg. My hair came out and for about 2 dys I felt a little tired but I am doing fine. I didnt have any problems with the RAI treatment. I had RAI done in July of 2008 and went on Synthroid in August of 2008. I have my good and bad dys but not due to RAI. That treatment went well for me.

So woth the treatment, your hair could come out? He has only one side of his thyroid that is the proble. My worry are the side effects. He does not take medication well. Thanks for the information.
