Hello to all. I had a TT in January 2008 (Medullary Thyroid Cancer) and over a year later I have a few questions:
1) My TSH has been as low as .03, with absolutely NO SYMPTOMS of hyperthyroidism, NONE (in fact, the lower my TSH, the better I feel). How is this? Can a person be asymptomatic? If anything, I have experienced hypothyroid symptoms such as weight gain, Raynaud's (something I never had pre-TT), fatigue, depression, etc. I understand that the TSH is a test of how well the pituitary is communicating with my thyroid, but I don't have a thyroid, how can my TSH be normal? The TSH seems to be the dumbest measure post-TT, so how do I convince my
endo that personally the TSH test has lost all credit with me? Honest, it means nothing to me, especially considering that my Free T4 and Total T3 are always
withing the normal range.
2) Speaking of low TSH, we are trying to get pregnant for our first time. I have been told to wait until last summer (a year and a half!) because two doctors have told me that I will either a) have trouble getting pregnant or b) have a miscarriage with these
levels (low TSH), so we reduced my dosage back in May to 137 MCGs of Synthroid and my Cytomel remaining at 10 MCGs daily (I was 150 pounds at that time, 12 pounds heavier than before the surgery).
Well that sure was a mistake. I gained another 7 pounds right away (had to buy new clothes AGAIN), I was depressed and crying all of the time, AND my menstrual cycle went out of whack! 56 days with no AF, then when she came, she was here for 1 day, then 44 days, same thing, etc. To top it off, I wasn't ovulating (once my cycle went cuckoo, I started doing the at home ovulation predictor kit). I have ***NEVER*** had such an irregular cycle; could it be related to the drop in dosage??? Now my OBGYBN would like to give me Clomid to help me ovulate.
Two months after lowering my dose, I went in to the endo with the top button of my jeans undone (TOO tight! UGH!), crying out of control, and begged her to
bring my dose back up to 150 MCGs. It was obvious I was a hormonal mess so she agreed (plus I had been charting my cycle and it was when I was at 150 MCGs that I was super-regular, more so than pre-TT). Anyway, she warned me again that I may not conceive or have a miscarriage with such a low TSH. Women who have had Papillary cancer go on to have successful pregnancies with a supressed TSH, why
can't I?
Which brings me to question #3) What are good levels during pregnancy? After my endo's decision to be "conservative" and bring my TSH up to .3, I am now afraid that she'll be "conservative" while pregnant. She's been great other than that,
she is a younger doctor (more open-minded) and OK with a zero TSH (as long as I'm not trying to get pregnant), and I have HMO so finding another endo is not an option. I've read online that it's better to be slightly hyper while TTC'ing and pregnant and I'm worried that maybe my endo doesn't know that or that she'll keep wanting to look at that TSH level.
And finally,, question #4) I've asked this *several* times, but any happy success stories of weight loss, normalcy, pregnancy, etc. post-thyroidectomy are
always appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance to any responses!
