Ugh I'm in the same boat! My mom just had to do this as well and she sees Dr. Burman at Washington hospital center in d.c. and the story is that Washington hospital center does the most scans and RAI treatments in the country (she had a weird characteristic of papillary and her endo sent her there). Their opinion is that the thyca low iodine diet is the best one out there. They gave her a printout of the thyca cookbook along with a sheet that says the following: "patients are allowed, if needed to make these changes to the thyca diet: you may have a limited amount of dairy products. This amount should equate to no more than 1 cup per day, you may have more than 6 oz of an allowed meat per day, you may have a limited amount of eggs, no more than 4 eggs a week, you may eat any type of commercial bread except white bread. We do not recommend bakery bread, you may have a limited amount of white rice, do not eat it every day, you may use condiments in small quantities.."

Now I would be hesitant to take advantage of all of those but remember its low iodine not no iodine so if a little sneaks in every so often it's not gonna kill your numbers. My mom made her own bread and followed the thyca diet. Her iodine level was 26. The goal is below 50. Hope this helps. It is super confusing

I have seen three or four different diets. And it is so confusing and everyone has their opinion from the very strict to the very lax. In some European countries they don't even use the low iodine diet and they get less RAI dosage! My thoughts on this (take them or leave them). I am trying to be as strict as possible - that is I am going with the Thyca diet for the most part. This way if I mess up or I really need a little milk in my tea one day (because tea is my comfort food) it really shouldn't mess up the over all numbers. I am staying away from sea food, iodized salt, baking my own bread, no cheese, no eggs, and the majority of the time no other dairy. I will have a little bit of milk in my tea on Sunday as a treat. But there are only two Sundays in my two weeks and I figured it out as far as how much iodine is in a cup of milk around 72 or so. I don't use a cup in my tea - probably about two tablespoons at most. If I am very strict most of the time, I can have this treat. That's my philosophy, and I know it doesn't jive with everyone else's.

I agree with you Dkim. It's so confusing! But if you're strict and a little slips in here and there it shouldn't push your numbers over the edge. I can't wait until this is over I just hope I don't need to do it again anytime soon! I second guess everything I eat. Read labels a thousand times. Hopefully my iodine level will be good.

Potato skins definitely need to be avoided. Dried fruits are ok but no cranberries.
Basmati rice is ok but also very little. Too much is to be avoided.

Rest assured that you can trust all the advice found on ThyCa's website. The information there is reviewed by more than 50 thyroid cancer specialists. There is a one-page (printable) LID Diet Guidelines Summary and a free, downloadable LID Cookbook with lots of good recipes to try while on the Low Iodine Diet. There is also important information about radioactive iodine in one of the sections. The physicians who input this information review it periodically so that it is up-to-date. I too have been following thyca's standards for the most part. I know some other diets say NO CRANBERRIES - but the thyca cookbook has recipes with cranberries as an ingredient! So, I have a package of dried fruits that include cranberries and I eat them. Not a lot and not everyday.... everything in moderation!

I have been keeping a blog of my diet and what I have been eating. For what it's worth - take a look if you're interested. I have found some foods at Trader Joes that seem like treats, and make me feeling like I'm cheating. The best find was unsalted potato chips - I just sprinkle on some non-iodized salt while eating them. Here's the blog site: http://ctycork.blogspot.com/

My Endocriologist would like me on this diet after the RAI, until I get the scan the following week. That seems so strict to me, I'm really missing milk in coffee!!

I found a list of foods high in iodine and cranberries was one of them. Not sure the recipes are monitored because guideline is no spinach and i have seen recipes with spinach. So double check a recipe before you make it. There are others don't remember what food but just make sure it is safe.

oh all veggies are not the same. I was going to buy squash and that is higher in iodine too. I do weigh my meat. It is a small amount but sometimes I can not finish it. I have a salad for lunch. Today I had half piece home made bread ad egg whites and with the salad I am full.
I tried raisins in my old fashion oat meal and it was good.
I have to stay on 2 more days after RAI

Watch out for strawberries, too. They are known to be high iodine in the US. So much info is conflicting, but some of the web lists are for other countries, and the location where food originates really matters. When in doubt, I left it out. So no cranberries or any dried fruit for me at all, no spinach, no potatoes, no rice, etc.

Yes to:
Romaine
Carrots
Celery
Other veggies that are low iodine - there are lots
Avocado
Organic chicken
Olive oil, balsamic vinegar, herbs, salt, pepper
Non-iodized salt and lots of it
Apples
Organic salt fee peanut butter
Unsalted nuts (added my own non-iodized salt)
Loose kernel (not in a bag) popcorn, olive oil, non-iodized salt, sometimes turmeric and pepper
Green tea if black coffee was too difficult
Dark chocolate chips - read label carefully for ok ingredients
Plain, unsalted oatmeal with fresh fruit (no strawberries or dried)

I got down to 20 before the RAI, so I was satisfied with my LID efforts. It's doable and healthy! Good luck!

I received a very small list of LID rules from my doctor's office. I tried to follow the ThyCa LID suggestions for the most part,and error on the side of caution. You will find the same thing is true of isolation precautions during RAI, and how long to stay on the LID, etc. Amazingly there is not really a standard across the country. It varies from doctor to doctor. As far as the LID, I thought I was being very careful but then had canned tomatoes and think that was a no no on the list. I guess being very careful for the most part made up for that one mistake.

Kineret makes a non dairy creamer in the frozen Kosher section of my supermarket (Albertson's) which has no casein or caregeenan or any other products from the sea. And it is ok...at least it looks like milk. I have a little with my Post shredded wheat squares. In my coffee I use Marshmallow Fluff and a little Kineret creamer (unfortunately not that healthy as it has high fructose corn syrup but will get me through the 3 weeks! My homemade almond milk kept turning sour). It is the best that I found for breakfast. One more week to go!

It is excessive to maintain LID past 48 hours after treatment according to overwhelming majority of specialists (some like Dr. Ain stop at 24).

Your level of 20 is enviable! Congrats! I am curious who checked her iodine excretion for you? Was it the Endo or Nuclear Department who ordered it? Do they check all prior to treatment? Where do you go for your care?

I sort of replied to you in another post but my endo is doing mine. They are giving me a lab slip so I can go to any place I would get blood drawn. I'm not sure who did my moms but my inclination is it was the endo. Good luck with everything. I'm finding the diet stressful but I will be relieved if I get my level back and it's low.

Lowl - I did just a spot urine check right before my RAI pill, at my request. Probably not as accurate as a 24 hour test, but it helped me feel more confident. I have been treated through Cleveland Clinic. I have tall cell variant and I was very concerned that the RAI work well the first time, before it becomes non-avid, so I took the LID extremely seriously and am now trying to live a very healthy, anti-cancer way of life. I hope it helps! Want to be free of this menace.

Regretfully, radiologists are least aware of LID as a group. Yours may be an exception, of course. But the reputable authorities agree on 24-48 hrs at the most. Best regards, LowI
