Is Anyone out there familiar with RECA?

Hello! I'm new here. I had two surgeries on Aug 23 and Aug 25. (first the right side of the Thyroid, Then the left)
I notice I'm tired all the time. I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with RECA ( Radiation Exposure Compensation Act) I live in Arizona.

I was in one of the zones for the Nevada testing site. I don't know much about the RECA though. Do you have an attorney? I also lived in Spokane... but it was after 71 so I don't think I'm included in that group.

My mom and dad both died from lung cancer. Dad worked at the Nevada site... mom used to take my older brother and sister to a hillside where they would watch the "mushroom" clouds from the testing site. Mom and dad were both heavy smokers so its hard to say if they contracted cancer from the testing site or smoking... my brother died from an auto accident. My sister has no cancer... but me... I have thyca and wasn't even born when dad worked there. Weird huh?

Patricia

What year was it when you lived in Nevada? I don't have an attorney. I just barely heard about RECA. It caught my interest because I spent every summer in one of the counties, but proving it is becoming a problem since I was only 1 year old.

Patricia, I'm so sorry to hear about that.

I had the same surgeries as you but the other way round, Left July 11 and Right July 19. I too am tired all the time. I am hoping it level's out soon.

is another list of sites, but I have never looked into this before seeing your post. It has certainly been something I wondered about, but strongly suspected it wouldn't matter what my case may be.
I was not faimilar with RECA but just now looked into it. My sister and I spent 6 years of our lives under the age of 10 in New Mexico during the covered period. (father in Air Force). We were in Alberquerque and Clovis, NM and traveled around New Mexico as vactions permitted. I was born in 1952. I also lived in Spokane, Wa, and Fairbanks, Alaska. My sister had a pituitary tumor as a young child (under the age of 10) that went undiagnosed until she was 25. My mother (1927- 2002) had thyroid problems, but other than being on replacement hormones I don't know that anything was diagnosed. We share blood abnormalities, and I strongly suspect bone marrow issues, but don't know the extent of her issues, and I have too much on my plate now to chase down the source of my blood problems. They aren't good for me but they are not life threatening so far. Both white and red cells are affected, so autoimmune is reflected in the WBC, bone marrow in the RBC's
Thank you for mentioning RECA. Actually a good deal of the raidation went north and east with hot spots even in New York from a specific weather pattern at the time. I have read, but not verified, that many feel that that the rise in Thyca is linked to the fallout via rainfall to these testing sites as milk tended to be more locally consumed then. I haven't chased any of this down, and feel for the most, it would be futile. Life happens. But it would be interesting to know if there is a disproportionate rise in thyca in the likely exposed population from fallout areas of that time.

tazbeau, If you google reca, you'll find helpful info. If I can help you, Please let me know.

I don't know anything about reca but if you just had your surgeries in August, it would not be unusual for you to be tired all the time. I fought fatigue for six months, part from surgery and part from synthroid not being regulated yet. It took close to a year before I really started to have much energy. I'm sure there are others that can tell you the same story. Our bodies have to adjust to no thyroid and then synthetic hormone and the thyroid affects so many functions in our body that people don't even realize. Sometimes our sleeping patterns are completely screwed up, not sleeping well at night and then tired all day. If we are hyper, our bodies are in overdrive so we get tired. People think if you are tired you are hypo, but that is not always the case. I hope you start feeling better but please don't think you are alone with the fatigue.

After you posted, I researched it and my family doesn't come close to meeting their criteria. I suspect that many many people have been affected by the testing, but there would never be any compensation.
New Mexico.. Clovis specifically, is a dusty dirty place place to live with dirt devils and little lizards and thorns and all sorts of dangers. I loved every minute of it.
