I am interested to find out if anyone else affected by TRAPS has a significant history of middle ear infections.

yes my son is now 14 and has had a significant number of inner ear infections about 8 to 12 a year

My daughter, Erika, did not have any ear infections till after her tonsils and adnoids were removed in 2004. After that time she started getting congested similar to allergy symptoms just before an attack. In turn, her ears filled with fluid and severe ear infections occured. She has had tubes put in her ears last 2 years which has helped substantially by keeping the fluid drained. Dr. Kastner, at NIH, also put her on Singular daily, which has helped as well. She was completely tested for allergies, and all tests were negative. Dr. Kastner told me that other children with HIBS have a similar condition and the singular has helped them as well.

My son who is now nearly 17 has had some years where he had an ear infection a month. It seemed like his ears never cleared up. Two sets of tubes were inserted and surgically removed. The tubes frequently let the infected fluid ooze out, providing some pressure relief, but the tubes were clogged most of the time anyway from secretions.
In spite of his age and size (over 6ft tall) ear infections are still an issue. He recently had an ear drum graft because he had so many ear infections that ruptured the drum and it didn't fully heal anymore. I can't help but believe that there is a connection between the chronic inflammation caused by TRAPS and the overproduction of mucousal fliuds involved in ear infections. I just don't know exactly where to go or what to do about this. I would like to see some turning point where my son can have one less thing to have to see a doctor about........

Hello,
Your question could not have come at a better time! My little guy who is 6 and has TRAPS, has had many middle ear infections over the past few years -- they ususally come on without warning (often around a TRAPS episode) and he ends up with a ruptured ear drum.
He has had persistent fluid in his middle ears since September of this year (although only one infection since then) and he was just evaluated by an audiologist yesterday because he has had such a hard time hearing over the past few months. He is in Kindergarten this year, and it has been difficult for him at times because he simply can't hear what's going on / what he's supposed to be doing.
It looks like all of that fluid has now become very thick and is stuck in his eustachian tubes, and the audiologist confirmed a pretty significant hearing loss in both ears. Sooo, we are off next week to see an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor about having tubes placed.

My son does not have recurrent ear infections-what I am concerned about is that he may have his hearing affected from the inflammation associated with TRAPS. He often needs reminders to speak in an "inside voice" and is often unaware of how loud he is speaking. Plus, he says "pardon me", "huh", or "what" all the time. I've mentioned this a couple of times at our rheumatology appointments but this doesn't seem to be raising any eyebrows there. Now that I have read this I think I will pursue my concern a bit further. Has anyone out there had their hearing affected by TRAPS?
Karen
