Colonoscopies and SBS

0 Recommendations

I've had SBS for about 6 years after a bowel resection to remove a large tumor--Non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

AT my 6 month CT scan, no lymphoma signs but now need a colonoscopy. Anyone with short bowel ever gone thru prep for colonoscopy without IV fluids? I have been off IV fluids for a couple years now. But have had some difficulty with frequency/liquidity of BMs. Any ideas? I'm worried that i'll get dehydrated and end up sitting for hours in an ER.

Thanks for suggestions, experiences, ideas!

Mary, I have found that drinking a sports drink really helps keep me hydrated. I got it at the health food store and it only has 10 calories a pk.
I don't have a colon so I suffer 24/7 with diarrhea. As far as the tests go I haven't had to have the IV fluids whenever I go in for a scope. Have you talked to your doctor about your concerns?

thanx for your feedback. My own GI was out of town and when i tried to talk to the assessment clinic, i was told everything was "fine"

As it turned out, my prep didn't go very well--but in the opposite way, as it turned out. The clinic told me to keep taking my lomotil--even tho i asked repeatedly for them to check with a doc. So, the prep that i started at 4 in the afternoon didn't come to any fruition until 2:30 am. Then i used the mag citrate at 5 am and when i got to the test site, the prep wasn't complete enough!

At any rate, it turned out that i have more colon than the doctor had ever seen--the questionable spots were ok but i need another colonscopy because of scar tissue and adhesions.

So, my next are of research is Virtual Colonoscopy--which is completed with a CT scan! Cuz i have another 1 - 11/2 feet that they weren't able to visualize. I guess i'm blessed with so many opportunities to learn! LOL

I usually drink ceralyte cuz the sports drinks weren't enough to keep me hydrated. The ceralyte has a large rice molecule that keeps me from dehydration.
Thanks, Larch

A friend suggested Kern's Pear Nector. It's sold just about any grocery store. I find it most times at Big Lots even. She told me about if a colonoscopy, because I can't tolerate the other stuff. It works great! It does cramp or anything. I used it for contipation as well.
