Swimming in cold water

0 Recommendations

Hi

Can I call on some of your experience on swimming in cold/cool water with your ICD.

A few weeks ago I went waist height in the sea (Cornwall UK) it was far too cold (10oC - 50oF) to go in slowly but I was apprehensive on diving in the final bit as I know the shock on the body with jumping into cold water has an effect on heart rhythm. Would this cause my ICD to try and correct the rhythm with a few shocks?!

Has anyone had any problems or experience with this?? I am going back to Cornwall again in June but it will be slightly warmer (12oC - 54oF) so I will definitely be wanting to dive in.

Please advise,

Many thanks

Exercise Pain

Hi

Diving in to cool water 16oC went ok, went swimming in the river Thames this weekend and felt no treatment from the ICD. Just the shock of the cold!

Hope this helps someone in the future.

My mom has problems with dramatic temperature changes. In the past going from warm indoor air to cold air outside in winter months caused her to have chest pains. More recently, again in winter months, she would have chest pains when she moved from the cold outdoor air to the warm water in her water exercise class. I don't know if her ICD ever fired as a result, but her chest pain was enough to take her breath away. When her temperature normalized she felt better.

It's good to know you can enjoy your swims without the extra jolt from the ICD. That cold water shock is more than enough, I'm sure!
