Should I be worried?

0 Recommendations

I am 38, had my SCA Oct. 23, 2007 and ICD placed Oct. 29, 2007. I am 'perfectly' healthy according to the Dr's and no explaination can be made as to what I have. No Long Q-T syndrome, not Brugada or WPW. We are just still trying to figure it out. In the mean time....
I was grocery shopping this evening and not thinking when we were doing the self checkout. I leaned over to get something out of the basket and leaned right over the scanner and demagnetizing strip! The strip made the 'boing' sound it does when you scan a CD over it to demagnetize the security label. I didn't feel anything and when I got home and told my husband he didn't think it was anything to worry about.
My ICD has 'powered up' several times the last month but has not shocked me so I don't want to take any chances!!
Am I just being overly concerned or totally nuts for worrying?

Stress Syncope

Hi Tammy,
My suggestion would be to call the doctor ASAP and tell him what happened. It's much better to be safe than sorry!
I am in the same situation as you, as far as not knowing what caused my SCA. I just had a genetic test done (it took 6 months to get the insurance company to approve it!) which will hopefully give us a clue. I won't have results until sometime in October. It was to test for "CPVT." I don't know a lot about it, except that stress can trigger an SCA. I've had two, and both times it was a stressful time for me.
Good luck to you. Let me know how it goes!!
Mary

So do you have the home monitoring machine to send any ICD activity to the manufacturer ? How do you no the device is "powering up"? What do you feel ?
I have only had mine for 2 months, so I am interested what to watch for. If it were me, I would go in and have it interigated, but I am the type of person who wants to no if everything is working normally.
Please advise what your outcome is. Mary Corinne

Marycorinne,

The only reason I know it powered up is because I went to an Electrophysiologist and he check the device information that is sent over from my device's monitoring system. I didn't get a call from my Cardiologist or anything! I go back on the 9th and we will see what the Electrophysiologist will do.
I also have a condition called NeuroCardiogenic Syncope, have had for years but this has nothing to do with my SCA.

Mary,

I go to the Dr. on the 9th and I will ask him about the CPVT test. Maybe that will give some information!

Good luck, Tammy. It would be so interesting to know someone else with the same exact condition. (If I even have it!)

Heard back from my cardiologist office after they called Medtronics and did some research. All is fine! Medtronics and the Cardiologist said there should be no reason to worry and didn't even ask me in to test it! (I am a 'little' perturbed but nothing I can do at this point in time.)
The cardiologist said it was as if I came into their office to have the magnet test done there, all is in good working order. Guess my readings come through at night.?
Thanks for your responses!
Have a great day!

Hi Tammy,
I have a friend who got an ICD a year after I did. Hers sends the info to the doctor automatically at night. Mine has to be done over a phone line when they schedule it for me. It's still cool though!
Glad to hear all is well!!
:-)
