can some one answer a long qt question for me

0 Recommendations

I am a mother of a now 15 year old daughter who a few years ago fainted because I was cleaning her ear that was infected bc of a piercing. She had fainted before that while at summer camp in a very hot building. I brought her to the doc after the second time and they did an ekg where they said she had boderline long qt and sent us to a specialist. They did a treadmill tst on her and after allot of figuring and looking at numbers and then doing it again the specialist determined she did not have long qt and she could go ahead and do her soccer. Meanwhile he had given me a list of meds that can cause long qt. On the top of the list was benedryl which I had given my daughter the night before. I questioned the doc on this and he said no he didn't think that caused it.
That was as I said a few years ago and I have not been able to give her otc meds ever since then. If she had a cold or her allergies bothered her I would give her Zycam..which turned out to be a big no no.
So my question is there any one out there that has borderline long qt and if you have been told this are you supposed to avoid certain drugs? I am going to talk to her ped next month when she goes for her physical and maybe we will have a second oppinion. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks
Martie

Long QT syndrome Allergies

Martie,

I am so sorry to hear that your daughter is having these complications. Yes, you have a right to be concerned. I understand where you are coming from and your frustration with the situation. You have every right to get a second and third opinion from other specialists and EP specialist is the best. Tilt tables and EP studies are the best way to diagnose long qt syndrome in someone who does not she a lot of ecg changes. Good luck with it and keep us updated. If you have any questions we are all here and will help with any questions we can.
I have 3 biological children and they all 3 exhibit symptoms and we are in the long process of testing. One has an implanted monitor called a Reveal after all of her tests (no EP study yet) were negative. Our oldest is waiting on approval from his cardiologist for an EP study or something to give more information. So far he has only had ecg's, event and holter monitors.
My youngest daughters treadmill was fine, her ecg's - borderline positive, holter monitor - normal, event monitor - minor changes nothing to raise a red flag, echo - normal, tilt table - positive, EP study - positive, borderline but still positive. She is the only one of our children that have had the EP study done so far.

Thank you for your response. My gosh you are one strong lady to be facing these hurdles in you life. My daughter was tested like I said, just on a treadmill, and I can not explain it because I don't know why but I just feel like that is not enough testing for me to let it go. Call it mothers intiution I don't know. I am afraid to give her benedryl when she is suffering with allergies because I had given it to her the night before she fainted once. It was probably out of her system...but again I don't know. It was on the list of meds that can cause long qt. Do you refrain from giving your children any meds?
There is family history of heart problems but as far as know there has not been a sudden deaths. She has a physical in just a couple of weeks and I will talk to the Doc about it again. She is a good Doc. and I feel confident she will do the right thing. Maybe then.......
One more question before I stop rambling do your children feel tired all the time.? That is something my daughter constantly complains about. Thank you again for listening and I will keep you posted.

Martie,
Listen to your Mothers intuition! It is the one thing all of us Moms have and that is what kept me pushing to get my kids tested. No I don't give my kids any medication that is on the Arizona cert list.
Your daughter should have the tests my daughter had. Then you will know for sure what you are dealing with(and not dealing with). If her Dr won't do anything, then move on to the next Dr! It took me 20 years to find a Dr to listen to me about my symptoms; then it was only AFTER my SCA and firing another cardiologist that I found the one I have now.
There is no history of this in my family, none! No one but me and the kids have it so the EP cardiologist told me that is may have started with me. So, history is part of the diagnostic procedure but the biggest is symptoms. How long has she been passing out (when did it start)? How often? Just the once or other times? Is she dehydrated? Is she passing out while resting, noise, startling, phone ring, dog bark etc... the list of questions are almost endless.
The point is document every time she blacks out or passes out, what is going on at the time, how long it lasts and how her pulse rate is. Knowing this will help your Dr in their decisions.
And yes, my kids are tired alot!
