AED Cost and Training

0 Recommendations

I'm thinkiing about suggesting that the local religious community that I'm affiliated with, purchase an AED. I had a heart attack in early July and 10 days later had a VT. I was very fortunate that I had heart attack and the VT in the hospital and, after the VT, my heart regained its normal rhythm on its own. Has anyone received a grant to help subsidize the cost of the AED? Also, does a regular CPR course teach how to use the AED? And finally, are there different types of AED's and, if so, what are their respective costs? Thanks.

Mitch---

We just finished raising money to put AEDs in all the school buildings in our county. In the State of Iowa, the Iowa Department of Public Health EMS Bureau makes grants available to place AEDs in churches, schools, and similiar locations. It pays 50% of the cost. We had each school apply for the grant and then collected donations from local businesses and individuals. We also received grants from other local foundations and groups to pay the other half. You can check to see if your state's Department for Health has similiar programs. Also, many service organizations and corporations have grants available for local projects that you might check into. Your local EMS group or American Heart Association could probably help you, also.

The AED that saved my life was made available to our local EMS group with federal money given to the State of Iowa. However, the President's 2007 budget eliminated that program. (Hopefully, funding will be re-instated for 2008)

Your best bet, however, would be to check with local organizations, businesses , and individuals for donations.

As far as a CPR course teaching the AED--The American Heart Association's Heartsaver AED class teaches the AED along with CPR and choking on the adult, child, and infant. Whatever CPR class you choose to take--find out ahead of time if they teach the AED.

About the cost---go to www.aedsuperstore.com and that will give you an idea of the cost. Be sure to talk to your local EMS group and get their ideas on the brand and type that best fits your needs.

Hi Mitch,

Just adding my two cents. It would help to know which State you live in. As Butch stated, there are different programs available in each state. For example, in my State, Delaware, the Office of EMS has a Public Access to Defibrillation (PAD) program which gives AEDs to qualifying organizations.

As far as training, the American Red Cross also trains in CPR and AED. For both AHA and Am Red Cross, make sure to ask for AED training in addition to CPR. Both offer just CPR training and CPR & AED training - wish they would get over that hurdle.

Best wishes on your effort,
Stew

Butch & Stew,

Thanks for your responses. By the way, I live in New Jersey.
