Apraxia

I had a stroke shortly before Hurricane Katrina, in New Orleans. Let me tell you that the hospital is no place to be "incommunicado", during a storm or anytime, for that matter. An Angiogram brought on the stroke that left me with Apraxia. In the beginning, I was unable to speak or even to swallow.
Five months with very patient Speech Therapists led me to realize that I could speak, although halting while I plan my next utterance. At first I cried every time I went to therapy, thinking I would never speak again.
Can anyone out there relate? Has anybody had the same experience?
I'm 65 years young. Two years ago I bought my first (ever) computer, a laptop, and my daughter taught me to use it. She even set me up on MySpace & a poker site. Nobody knows how "funny" I talk anymore!

Hi Grannykip

I have not experienced what you describe but want to offer you support and am so glad you are reaching out online!

I would love to hear you speak, sounds to me you should be proud for surviving and also lucky to have family to support you.

Hugs

Hi Grannykip,
My name is Jenni and I had a stroke 2 years ago when I was 47 that left me with apraxia just like you! I don't know of anyone here in New Zealand who has anything like me, so it was amazing to hear about you and what you've been through. The strange thing about my apraxia is that it has given me a different accent! My speech therapist said she never heard of this before. I want encourage you and ask you how much your speech has improved over the last 5 years? It seems like a very slow recovery for me and I find it hard to even notice my improvements. Was it like learning to speak again for you? Also my rhythm when I speak has gone! So I have to tap my leg for every syllable I say which is very annoying! I have to laugh because if I didn't I would cry. I want to pass on my love to you.

Thankyou for writing this. My daughter just happened to come across this page when she was searching for apraxia support websites! Very amazing.

Love Jenni.
