That Damn Prednisone!

0 Recommendations

Has anyone ever ended up needing blood after weaning down from Prednisone? Yesterday I needed 2 units of blood due to a low hematocrit ( 28.2 ) and a low hemoglobin ( 7.2 ). Besides Sarc, I also have Systemic Scleroderma, and one of the GI problems associated with SS is a condition called Watermelon Stomach, whereby the tiny arteries in my stomach slowly bleed. Because of this condition, I have been anemic for years. I receive IV Iron weekly, but have never required blood. When I asked the doctor if the Prednisone - which has been known to cause me gastric distress in the past - could have caused the Watermelon Stomach condition to worsen, he said that he was "pretty sure" that Prednisone was not the culprit! Any body got a guess? Thanks - docrock
