severe leg pain explained

0 Recommendations

Dear friends,
My legs, knees and hips were hurting so bad that my parents took me to the emergency room. I had about 20 x-rays done one my lower back, hips, knees, ankles and feet. The diagnosis osteoarthritis! Now I have some questions that maybe you can help me with. Does sarc cause osteoarthritis or does the meds cause it. Also I am told that sarc causes a arthritis as well. Is it osteo or some other kind of arthritis. I am very confused, all I know is that I am hurting. My current medications for sarc include 30mg of methotrexate per week, and 7 mg of prednisone daily.
If anyone has any experience in this maybe you could help explain it to me. Thanks, God Bless Dollh

Last night on Mystery Diagnosis the patient had many of the symptoms you describe and after 13 yrs on a hunch an older doc did a pelvic scan and found a slow growing neuroma pressing on the femeral artery and the sciatic nerve. Immediately after her surgery she had relief from all the pain in hip knee and foot.

If they could see osteo and biopsy it maybe the biopsy would show Sarc granuloma as well? Ask for an MRI, CT scan anything to confirm or challenge the xray! This way you get the right treatment started.

Sounds like a second opinion is in order - always get copies of oll your imaging summeries and all lab work so sneaking out for a second opinion is wuick and easy.

Sounds like you need to start going up on the Pred until your symtoms improve and your b/w has normalized, When your 24hr, urine Calcium is normal then you're safe assuming the Sarc has been punched down to inactivity and you can begin tapering the Pred very slowly. If your serum calcium is high and you vit D is low - doNOT take any suppliments - Sarc metabolism work just the opposite of osteoarthritis and you can print that out from this forum to show your doc. Suppliments may cause kidney stones and renal failure.

Keep us posted and ask lots of questions,
good journey,
I.

Dolh,
Weather change can play a big role. I start to ache more all over in October. It stays like that till April. I am from Calif so the Midwest is not good for me those months.
I too have osteoarthritis. I had that before they found the Sarcoid. Very painful. Upping my steroid dose for a couple of weeks usually helps.

Hey there from London England! Sorry to hear about all the pain you guys seem to be in, likewise I'm afraid, I hit sarcoidosis 7yrs ago in the lungs, an now in fairly good health, just have the everyday aches and pains, some days worse than others, but do have a very painful hip! Could be anythin I guess, good luck everyone, si glad I've found a site to chat on an read what you guys have to say 'you are not alone'! All the best x mandy.

Inflammatory arthritis. That is caused by the inflammatory disease "sarcoidosis". I have it in my ankles (relatively common insarc, rare in general population) and knees, wrists, hands, etc.
Eventually it can cause destruction to joints but likes soft tissue such as tendons. It may or may not be seen on xray.
It seems odd to have developed this while on Methotrexate. Prednisone, however is known to cause destruction of bone due to calcium leaching and hormonal metabolism interference. I can't imagine increasing it if you are having bone destruction issues.
Good luck.

I was diagnosed last March with sarc. I am lucky enough to have been able to figure out the environment I was working in made me ill so once I stopped going there I got better. I never took medication, but did suffer from horrible pains in my legs hips and knees, and all my joints in my lower body. I still occationally get the pain, so I started taking vitaminBcomplex as well as liquid D3.

I was tested for my vitamin levels by my doctor and that is how I knew what to take and how much. Since I have been taking these vitamins, my pain has almost disappeared. When I forget, my pain reminds me.

The cheap vitamins dont cut it.
This is what I am taking:
Crusadian (brand)
Opti B Complex

and
Pure Encapsulations (brand)
Vitamin D3 liquid

I was concerned about everything I read about vitamin D and kidney stones. My Doc said if I have never had a kidney stone, not to worry.

Hope this helps!
God Bless,
D

Sarcoidosis and the Body
Sarcoidosis is a "multiorgan" disease - meaning it almost always involves more than one organ. It's unpredictable and affects different people in different ways.

You can learn about the ways in which sarcoidosis affects the body in FSR's Sarcoidosis and the Body brochure.
