Sarcoid and Asthma

Hello. I am new to this site, and I was just diagnosed with Sarcoid about 10 days ago so I guess I'm new to that as well. I also have asthma. I was wondering if anyone knows if people with respiratory disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, copd, or pneumonia are more susceptible to catching this disease.

Hello. I am also new to this site and was told that they believe I have Sacroidosis. I have been sick with bronchitis since October and have gone down hill since. I also had respiratory infections on and off for the past 4 months. I believe it is linked, but I am no doctor. Just something I have observed. A co-worker of mine (we work at the same elementary school) has also missed 6 weeks of work due to respiratory infections. Her Pulmonary doctor said her asthma was working up and the old building we work in was the cause. Hang in there. I am trying to learn as much as I can about this illness.

I don't know; but I was told I had mild asthma a few years prior to getting the sarcoidosis diagnosiis thru biopsy. However at least twice a year I was also told I had bronchitis .....
I feel the Sarcoid trumps all and the priors we just poor doctoring...

Hi, I am newly diagnosed as of last week. I have Sarc in my lymphnodes and lungs. I am having some joint pain and abdominal pain from my spleen and of course some chest pain.
I dont know much about it yet but have found this place to be a wealth of info and support.
I do have asthma have since I got pregnant with my daughter 19 years ago. Right now my lung function is pretty good so I am lucky and maybe some of that is due to Advair ???? I really don't know. I do know that just recently ( I have been sick for the past 3 months with this) and am now becoming short of breath or winded from doing the most simple every day things
I do wonder if many people have been misdiagnosed with asthma when it was really sarc? I dont think it was in my case but think maybe it could be in others?

I too have had asthma - for over 25 years. I have been on Advair for about 8 years so I've been through it all with asthma. My lung problems started almost 4 years ago - extreme difficulty breathing.

What I do know is that my shortness of breath now is very different to asthma. I know the kind of feeling I get when I forget to take my Advair (I NEVER have issues if I don't forget - this stuff is God's greatest invention after air conditioning and velcro!). My new doctor last week suggested that maybe it's the asmtha causing my difficulties (I'm not diagnosed yet) but I know for sure that this isn't the case. The feeling is very different. Asthma isn't painful. What I have is.

I wonder if there have ever been any studies on the ratio of lung sarc patients who had previously been diagnosed with asthma. Does anyone know? I did read recently that non-smokers are more likely to get pulmonary sarcoidosis....odd that this would be the case.

Thanks
Betty Jo

Yes I agree it is for me anyway a very different type of shortness of breath then my Asthma.. I am not wheezing I just get winded. Walking a couple hundred feet leaves me breathing hard.

I have had Sarcoid for 16 years. Recently I have been diagnosed with Asthma, it is anyone's guess how long I have had the condition.
The Asthma nurse in whom I have faith looked into the links between the two and found that there were no links nor contra-indications recorded.
The problem is that Sarcoid is so rare.
It would seem that there appears to be no direct relation between my Sarcoid and Asthma.
Unless, as they say, someone else knows otherwise.
Russell.

I'm not sure if it makes you more susceptible or not. However, I was diagnosed with mild asthma one year before I was diagnosed with Sarcoid of the lungs. I have been sick with colds and sinus infections almost constantly for the the last 2 yrs or so and always end up with a terrible cough. I wonder how much is related to sarc.

I was reading your comment about sarcoid and asthma along with the others that were sent in response. I was diagnosed with ASthma many years ago and the probelms associated with this came and went as I got older. Then, 10 years ago when I was first diagnosed with sarcoid, the problems got worse. They said it wasn't asthma after all! Then yesterday, my doctor told me that I also had asthma! alongside the sarcoid and the sjogrens. Somebody make their mind up, yes, no, yes, no.!!! I didn't put this in my blog yesterday but it is very interesting to hear what others are saying about the link or not between asthma and sarcoid. I am not a smoker - although I have lived with a smoker for 30 years and my parents smoked when I was younger and my doctor told me that I might as well be classed as a smoker because of all the smoke i inhale! My husband is really trying to stop and hangs his head out of the window or goes to the gargage when he lights up. Now the laws in the UK have changed and people are not allowed to smoke in restaurants or public bars, it has made my outings a lot nicer as the air is a lot cleaner inside.

I was diagnosed with "occasional" asthma about 18 years ago; "occasional" apparently meaning using an inhaler several times a day to avoid the severe wheezing. As I got older, it happened less; I then switched to chronic bronchitis one or two times a year. (I almost think I preferred the asthma.) Since I was a smoker, I just passed it off on that. I quit three years ago, but continued with the bronchial joy; then around October / November of last year I started having more and more trouble catching my breath. As others have said, it was nothing like the asthma; painful and pretty concerning, actually. So, in January one day, I ended up in the ER because of this, and the CT scan showed my monster lymph nodes. Biopsy; diagnosed. Whee. I guess now I have a reason for this painful cough.
Docs may say there's no connection, but it sure seems like there is.

I was diagnosed with asthma 20 years ago, Sarc 5 years ago, I agree with some it is a different kind of SOB, not as wheezy more winded as someone said, strangely though since my Sarcoid diagnosis, I haven't had even one Asthma attack ( touches wood) I have been on Advair since, but last year my dose was lowered by half and I haven't taken ventolin in two years!! I often wondered which came first really, and whether I ever had asthma at all

GOOD EVENING. I HAVE ASTHMA AND SUFFERED FROM BOUTS OF BRONCHITIS OVER THE YEARS. SO MUCH THEY TOOK MY TONSILS OUT. I WAS WORKING AT A HEALTH CENTER WHEN THEY STARTED TO TAR THE ROOF. I WAS BREATHING THE FUMES FOR 3 WEEKS. THEN WHAT I THOUGHT WAS MY ASTHMA STARTING WAS SOMETHING ALL TOGETHER NEW TO ME. I STARTED WHEEZING, SHORTNESS OF BREATH,CHEST PAIN, WEAKNESS, ETC.MY DR THOUGHT IT WAS MY ASTHMA AND PUT ME ON ALL SORTS OF MEDS. I WENT TO WORK SICK EVERY DAY, PLUS IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BUILDING I WORKED IN WAS FULL OF MOLD. SO I WANT TO THINK SOMETHING IN THE BUILDING OR EVEN THE FUMES FROM THE TAR STARTED MY SARCOID. I'VE NEVER BEEN THE SAME SINCE.I HAVE HAD SARCOID SINCE 2001.I HAVE IT IN MY LUNGS AND SOMETIMES MY EYES. I GUESS THIS IS SOMETHING I'M GONNA HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE REST OF MY LIFE.
