Moving to Wilmington NC

0 Recommendations

My husband and I have finally decided that enough is enough and we are moving down to NC in 6 months. The rather rapid deterioration of my body has made me take stock in what is important in life and right now it is being near my family and seeing my beautiful niece grow up. My concern is that I need to find a whole new set of doctors and I have no reference point down there. So Im asking anyone in the wilmington area (Im even willing to go up to raleigh) can any one recommend: a pulmonologist, 2 opthamologists (one specializing in the retina and one corneal specialist), a cardiologist and/or a rheumatologist that all know about Sarcoidosis? I know I am asking a lot here, but if you can even steer me in the right direction for any one of these doctors I would appreciate it.

Dr. Tilley (919)966-6838 in Chapel Hill is the Pulmonary specialist that was recommended to me in NC. Dr. Klein (919)966-1884, an excellent Cardiologist in Chapel Hill who works with people with sarc...here is a site of references as well..best of luck to you!

I went to Dr. Tilley and was not impressed. I felt he blew me off. I was symptomatic and had evidence that I was not getting enough oxygen at night while I as asleep according to a sleep study I had prior to the visit. He did an xray and a PFT and told me everything looked fine and he would see me in a year. He said he would have someone call me to do some type of home test to see about the oxygen level while I slept. I never heard from them and I called him twice to see when they were going to call me and never got a call back. At that point I decided I was not going to see him in a year and am looking to find someone else. I was orginally told about Dr. Donahue at the same clinic at UNC and in retrospect should have made an appt with him. I got the feeling Dr Tilley had more openings and the told me he was just as good. I don't know but just thought I would share my expereince. Good Luck. I heard about a Dr. Mark Judson in Charleston. His name has come up several times. It is hard to find a good dr that seems to care.

Hi Pamk,

Thanks for letting me know about Dr. Tilley...but I really respect my local cardiologist. He is on top of everything and I feel like he is looking out for my best interest. Everything he said he would do, he has done and moreso....He hasn't steered me wrong yet so I will try out Tilley and see what's up. My doc did his fellowship at UNC and made lots of contacts there so I feel good about that. And I am very perceptive about when someone is my advocate or not. And when I feel like a doctor is not on my side, I drop him/her like a hot potato. haha! We'll see.

Best of luck to you with your problem.

I have also heard about Dr. Mark Judson in Charleston, SC. As a matter of fact, FSR awarded him a research grant this year at the Annual Kiss event in Chicago. He is affiliated with the medical university in Charleston (not sure of the exact name). I have contacted his clinic within the past couple of months, but you have to be referred from your physician. I did some research on the web and found out that he has one of the ten sarcoid clinics in the US!!! So, I think he would be a good doc to check out, also. My doc is at Duke University Medical Center and his name is Dr. Joel Morgenlander. He is an excellent neurosarcoid specialist and has great bedside manners. I hope this helps as you make your transition to this area. Be blessed and stay encouraged!

Thank you all for your replies. I was beginning to panic that I didn't even have a starting point to find all of these doctors. While I am attempting to make my life better, I was concerned that I was going to put my health at risk by not getting the care I need. You can't begin to imagine how much this meant to me.

Thank you all,
Sue

Hi, smurph
There is a sarc specialist at UNC-Greenville. I don't know anything about him from a personal standpoint but it might be worth checking out. Here's his webpage. It has all of the contact info including his e-mail address.

Hope you will love NC. It is a wonderful state to live in.

I just went to see Dr. Tilley and Chapel Hill and he is EXCELLENT! He spent so much time with me showing me xrays of my lungs...he compared them to my CT scans from 2005...he drew pictures to illustrate what he was talking to me about...he took to the time to look at all of record information that I brought with me...I had a long list of questions and he took alot of time to answer each one. After I left, he even chased me down to ask for some more information from another doctor of mine. I felt really good after speaking to him and I feel like he is very knowledgeable and is looking after my best interests.

I highly recommmend Dr. Tilley. He's a nice, very thorough-minded doctor.
