Mononeucleosis to Sarcoidosis

0 Recommendations

I had mononeucleosis a few years ago and I have read that some scientists believe that mono and sarc are linked. It is generally accepted that since mono damages your immune system it could lead to sarcoidosis and other autoimmune issues later.

Just wondering, have any of you had mono? How long did you have it before experiencing symptoms of sarc?

Hmm this is a new one to me! I have had mono twice. The first time I was 17 or so and again when I was 19 (had just moved out on my own 2nd time). Both times I was told that I got mono because I had strep and didn't get it treated all the way. Guess I didn't finish my antibiotics good enough and I got strep a couple times a year EVERY year growing up.

Anyhow.. it was a good 10 years before I started having any symptoms from this crap. I have neurosarc. I asked where that came from and they never said anything about mono. Started having problems when I was 29, had brain surgery just before my 30th birthday, and stuck on too many pills right now hoping that something works somehow!

I dealt with the same thing when I was younger. Always had strep and then eventually had mono. I want to talk to my doc about this because I think there's a chance that there is some kind of connection.

Had strep a lot as a teenager and had mono in my early 20's.

I have never had mono or strep either. I was diagnosed with sarcoid in 1986, but the doctors in Mayo, believe I have at it at least since 1977.

I'm 58, was diagnosed in 2007, never had mono or strep nor have I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express...

Clever!

I don't think that mono ultimately causes sarc in all cases but I think for some people it may contribute to it.

i just cant help myself, sarcoidosis has made me sarcastic...
ya think anybody else has those symptoms?...

I believe it may be developing...

I had mono about ten years ago. I've been sarcastic all my life :).

I had strep quite a bit when I was younger and had a horrible case of Mono when I was in college (19 or 20 years old), Was diagnosed with Sarc last year when I was 30.

I am curious was your brain surgery related to your neurosarc? Thank you for your reply. Stay well.

Glad to see you have a good sense of humor. Laughter is the best medicine and 2date there is no co-pay.......Be well.

Hi! I was wonde4ing about the mono too. I had it when I was 17 years old just starting my senior year. I was out of school for almost 3 months! I really had it bad. And I was so weak when I did go back to school I could only go half days. I had to work so hard to make up everything so I could graduate with the rest of the class. When I was 14 I contracted yellow jaundice and that really set me back too. I was diagnosed with rhuematoid arthritis when I was 26 and I was diagnosed with sarc when I was 44. I'm now 55 and I will conquer my life eventually! I have a wonderful husband, 3 great sons, and 6 gorgeous grandbabies. I have the best life! So there is a little crap laying aroiund here and there, I'm still happy! Hang in there. Kathy

I had a bad case of mono when I was 22. (In the hospital for a week, then home on bed rest for 5 weeks after -- I didn't throw a positive mono test until 3 weeks into the illness).
I was diagnosed with sarcoidosis officially when I was 40. However I did have a biopsy a few years earlier that showed both sarcoid and necrobiotic lipoderma while having a flare of up the erythema nodosum on my legs. I had a high ACE that time, but no lung infiltrates. Since then my ACE is lower, still have a few erythema spots on my leg and have large spots on my lungs.
Luckily I go tomorrow for my next checkup (pulmonary function tests, chest xrays and latest ACE levels).

My husband, who is the person in our family with sarcoid had significant strep throat infections at least twice a year for most of his adult life. AND...he is married to a sarcastic woman! Did I cause all this?!

I'm glad to know that most of you can manage a sense of humor through illness and yes, it is the best medicine. Stay healthy all and thanks for the replies!

I did not ever have mono. Diagnosed last May with the lung kind I guess that also attacks the kidneys. I had endometreosis in my 30's and wonder if any other women out there are of Scottish/Irish descent who have had endo and sarcoid.

Hello...
I have had strep once. Never had Mono.

While it may be unrelated, I had mono when I was 19. Not really a bad case, all it meant was taking finals feeling like a dishrag and then reading "The Lord of the Rings" over the holiday break from college. Not long thereafter (within a year) I had erythema nodosum on both ankles. The doc thought it was a reaction to birth control pills (back then the dosage was higher-1972), and so I changed my contraceptive method for good.

About 8 years later I had VERY swollen feet. The doc tested me and said I had positive rheumatoid factor, so we assumed RA. For many years I was told I had some weird version, as it was very mild. Now, at 54, the sarcoidosis hit my lungs and I KNOW what was going on all those years that my disease was considered palindromic.

At least in my case, it could be related. I'm just thankful that my body resisted the beast for 3 decades before giving in.

So many of you have had strep and/or mono. It's interesting. And for those that didn't be glad!

YANKEEFAN-I am Scotch-Irish and endo does run in my family. I don't have it but all of the women in my family do.
