Milestone for me

1 Recommendation

I recently verified that I have lost 50 of the 100 lbs I gained on Prednisone and I am still on Prednisone. I mention this on facebook and some of my friends there who have sarcoidosis want me to tell them how. So if I may I am sharing that posting with all of you. Some of you have been dealing with all of this longer then I so please do share your thoughts. With respects and blessings of wellness for all. Here it is.

Greg’s Lifestyle Diet

It has been necessary to radically change my lifestyle and diet due to Prednisone use to control my Neurosarcoidosis. Prednisone use has made me Pre-Diabetic and to have high Blood Pressure and also to have gained approx 100 lbs of body weight.

To control the Diabetes and high Blood Pressure is has been necessary to extremely lower the following Sodium, Sugar, and Starch.

Now for starch it was necessary to limit myself to 2 starch servings a day (i.e. one piece of bread is one starch serving. To assist in accomplishing this I have been using wraps in place of sandwiches. The wraps are “Flatout” flatbread I usually get the light wheat. It was brought to my attention when researching a good diet at bestlife.com. These light Flatout s are 90 calories, 8g of net carbs and 0g of sugar.

Now for lunch meats I have found that Boreshead has a, low sodium Roast Beef and a Lacy Swiss cheese that is low sodium also. I find these are the lowest that I could find in sodium and sugar and still taste good.

Basically you need to choose lifestyle habits and choices that lead towards low starch and low sodium and low sugar food. Heck I make pizzas out the Flatout every Saturday nite using low fat and low sodium cheese and turkey pepperoni.

Prior to this change in my eating habits while on Prednisone my blood sugar avg. jumped to over 200 and blood Pressure avg. of 200/115 after two months in this life style change I have lowered the my blood sugar avg. to 82-91 and blood pressure to 125/85. Blood pressure was still too high and I had to start taking a light blood pressure med. But at least I have lowered my blood sugar and also while doing this in 6 months while still on Prednisone I have dropped over 50 lbs. from almost 300 leaving the hospital and now down to 246.4 this morning which backs up a 249.4 on Monday.

I will post more as I think of it. I hope this starts other people on the right path and it is helpful. This lifestyle choice was correct for me. Please check with your primary Doctor to make sure it is right for you. I believe this is a lifestyle choice is the right one. If anyone has questions please message me and I will try answer fully.

Congratulations! Losing weight and eating healthy nowadays is the hardest thing to do. That is awesome that you have changed your lifestyle!!

Congratulations! I am on Prednisone for the past three months and have gained 35 lbs. I am miserable and all my PC says is knock that weight off. My weight gain seems to be more in my belly--I look eight months pregnant. also, my PC is not even monitoring my blood pressure or glucose. He says it will all go back to normal when I am off meds. Any suggestions for breakfast? And what do you do when you get that ravenous steroid hunger? i get that several times a day.

pearlsnowflake,

Well as for breakfast I do several different things. For cearl there two that I eat with no fat milk or soy Milk. They are All-Bran Wheat Flakes and Kashi Heart to Heart Warm Cinnamon. I also do eggs some times. But the main thing I do is read labels now. I select items the are low fat, low sodium, no or low sugar (watch out for those sugar alcohols) they can raise your blood sugar also. As for snackage attacks well I really know about those. I keep frozen grapes and baby carrots on hand. For me I required a lifestyle change and not just a diet per say. Heck I did that and quit nicotine and alcohol at the same time. That was rough still is some days. But I wish you well and I hope I have answered your questions good enough. Just remember forget a diet think life style changes and read those dang labels. Be well and please be blessed.

Congratulations! It is so difficult to lose weight, and it sounds like you've made wonderful decisions to get yours under control. Best of luck to you in your continuing efforts. And you quit smoking too? Wow, that's just great. That's hard to do too. I quit 7 months ago, and there are still days I really want to reach for one, but it is getting easier. But mine is mostly when I am bored or really stressed. Take care and blessings to you.

Angie

Hi Greg,

First and foremost I want to thank you so much for serving our country and for your patriotism. God bless you. Are you still enlisted?

Amen to the life style changes. You don't even have to obcess over the scale when you feel your clothes fitting looser :) And yet, though it is important to your health and well being it does not define who you are - your words and your actions do as you well know. So I salute your endeavors and may the wind be always at your back!

I apologize, I read nicotine and immediately thought smoking. However, I do know from past experiences (not my own) that smokeless tobacco is just as difficult to stop as smoking. So I applaud you. You are doing a great job. We quit around the same time, I quit smoking March 29. Was my 43rd birthday gift to myself, although a few days late. God bless.

Angie

IreneMarie,

No mama I am no longer enlisted 10 1/2 years of service. 2 conflicts and lot of camping trips (hmmmm)
camping trips are the ones we do not discuss.
Thank you for you blessings I wish the same to all.

Krumdawg,

Thanks for the life style change info? i need to begin to lose the weight I gained as I am finally tapering the steroids and hope to get the 100+ pounds I've gained off as well. I quit smoking July 2007 and believe that is when the gaining started. What meals do you have at dinner? people keep telling me fish...not a fan of fish except for mcd's filet of fish.......ha

Hi pearlsnowflake,
I have been going to a dietician, 7 months on prednisolone now. She suggested to eat smaller meals and have planned snacks inbetween. Eat six times a day etc. She felt that if I sat down really hungry, I would eat too much and not be able to stop because of the appetite increase etc. Hope this helps.
Cheers Deb

I agree with the 'grazing' idea. It's better for your blood sugar, too. Matter of fact don't most brand name diets work just that? - Healthy snacks?

Fish - Chicken and Lean beef, I just stay away from sugar, sodium, Fat, and white flour starches. I just eat what ever I can that is low in all of those. Tofu noodles in place of standard noodles. I just aim to those four as low as possible in my eating lifestyle. To call it a diet is not right. It is mostly a lifestyle change a way of thinking and looking at food. yes 5 or 6 small meals a day is the answer it increases your bodys metabolic rate. I use to do that when I was power lifting but then again I was lot younger and eating alot more calories to keep up with my training and supplements. Adding B-12 and Folic Acid to help combat my fatigue I have. Slow process roght now but I will get back into the gym to help get the rest of this #$%^$%$@@#$%^^ Flab off me put on by Prednisone. I know it is a slow and steady fight that will win this and I am in for the long run. Wish I could still run but thats a another posting.

I am so happy for you. I know what weight gain can do to your self esteem and I know losing it can reverse that effect into happiness.
Keep up the good work. I've lost over 30 myself and just bought a new pr of jeans the other day, some 6 sizes smaller, hurray.
