Koilonychia

0 Recommendations

Hi,

Has anyone else out there suffered from koilonychia, which is a flattening or spooning of the nails? I have it for the second time.

Has anyone else had a helicobacter pylori infection or been diagnosed with anemia of chronic disease?

Hi Pris

I get that spooning of the nails. I call it pigeon claws. I never knew the name for it! My doc didn't either. he told me it was no big deal. I thought I was just lacking some kind of vitamin. They grow then bend over the tips of my fingers. is that what you mean?

Usually they are just really brittle and peel and break though.

Be well

Hey again Pris

Never had H Pilori though. Been tested as i used to have some really nasty acid reflux before I had the nissen fundoplication surgery and hiatal hernia repair. Was tested several times for it even through endoscopy but never tested positive for it! Had no problem for a few years with reflux, but the methotrexate seems to be kicking it up again. UGH!

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Thanks for the information. Usually the spooning means iron deficiency. Last time I had it the rheumatologist was concerned that I was bleeding from ulcers, but it turned out to be helicobacter.

Pris

No not that one but I get nails with crinkles or ridges in them. Not sure what it is but they are brittle too.
Bunkie

Hi Bunkie,

Crinkles and ridges can be age. But also other things. Is there psoriasis in your family? It depends on whether the crinkles and ridges are vertical or horizontal.
