God Bless Bernie Mac

My heart goes out to the Family and Friends of an Awesome Comedian and Actor, Bernie Mac.
Does it have to take a senseles death of Superstar to finally get profiled for this terrible disease?!
I hope this is a wake up call to everyone who thinks that remission is a cure. Anything can happen to our lungs and the fibroids that have developed in our lobes are there forever. Please see your Doctor or Specialist regularly for testing when you are in remission. You may feel okay but then....BAM.
I feel soooo aweful right now. This is such a great site to be able to vent my feelings.
Please Take Care,
God Bless You...Bernie Mac

I feel sad today. I've been putting off going to have
my annual work up and exam. It just when you go to the doctor it always seems that that find something wrong with you. I'll be calling and setting it up monday though.

I'm so incredibly sad for all of us especially Bernie's loved ones. I've been crying for the last hour. I guess what makes it bearable are the moments I shared with my husband watching, "The Bernie Mac Show" and laughing with gusto. He brought joy to so many.

Love to all,
Jackie7

I, too, am SO sad about this. I feel that we have all lost a brother. I just rented the "original kings of comedy" and plan to celebrate his life for a while...
To his family and loved ones: godspeed.

I hadn't heard yet! Was it complications from the sarc.?
Pat-y

Yes, in a way. Apparently, Bernie Mac has Sarc but was in remission from around 2005. He was admitted to Hospital with pneumonia. That was the cause of death. Now as we all know, Sarc causes fibrous type granulomas in the lungs. What might have happened is the lungs were so damaged from Sarc that he could not fight pneumonia. Don't quote me.
I was admitted to Hospital for 3 weeks in 2004 with that and barely made it. I also had full Sarc and on all kings of meds..Pred/methotexate etc..so immune system sucked back then.

Here is one person's opinion of what happened with Bernie Mac. The good news is that it gives sarcoidosis more publicity. The not so good news is that the author of this publication and website is more than a little fanatical. It's easy to tell as he describes the causes of sarcoidosis...so either he's a genius (not!) or a guy who has found a way to make a buck. In fact he says that Bernie Mac didn't even have sarcoidosis. Is this author smarter than Mr. Mac's doctors? Maybe since I don't have alot of respect for much that is written in these articles, I shouldn't even be sharing. However, it does give another opinion as food for thought.

Rest in peace Mr. Mac

Hi guys, or should I say "G'day".

Being an Aussie, I don't know who Bernie Mac was, but I am sure he has brought you all a lot of pleasure, and I am sorry for Bernie's friends, family and fans at his sad passing.

Although I don't know, I would guess that there is a smidge of truth in Mr Natural New's article. Most doctors wouldn't know a remission or a reactivation of a disease if it hit them in the face. Only the person with the disease can truly know whether they go into remission, or come out of it. The problem is convincing doctors when you're coming out of a remission. It is human nature that doctors want to cure you, so it is always a slap in the face to them when you come in complaining.

In Mr Mac's case, I think he may have chosen to keep working. If he was doing his comedy show, he was probably working 12 - 15 hour days. We all know how hard it is to do something like that with sarcoid fatigue and pain. It must have been incredibly hard for him prior to medication. He was on methotrexate and prednisone which would have kept that pain and fatigue at bay to a large degree. However, methotrexate and prednisone are powerful immunosuppressant drugs. They would have lowered his immunoglobulins to almost nothing and lowered his white cell count to dangerously low levels. Working long hours on top of this would have left him extremely susceptible to infection.
I guess it was his choice to continue working and his doctors facilitated this. However, it is a lesson as to what can happen if prednisone is taken for prolonged periods or as an aid to keep oneself in employment.

God bless you Bernie Mac. You were hysterical. You always made me laugh. I feel for your family and friends. The planet just became a little less funny with your passing.

Wether or not his death was Sarc related seems to be a debate right now, use his passing as a catalyst to keep yourself healthy. Pay attention to this disease.

You can bet the number of Sarc related doctors appoinmnets being made will be up dramaticlly on Monday.

REST IN PEACE BERNIE!!!

RIP Bernie, you will be greatly missed. I didn't even know he had sarc. I hope this may help in more research for the disease.

I felt so bad about Bernie Mac's passing too....i actualy felt sick to my stomache for most of the day...i just found out he had sarc when was admitted in the hospital this last time. Its terriblehow quick something like this can happen...scary too. I mean,he apparently thought he was alright....like many of us do...but when are we really "alright"??? are we ever going to be completley "alright" again??? I know they are saying that pnuemonia was his cause of death...but you cant tell me that the sarc had nothing to do with it...I just spent 2 weeks in the hospital for pnuemonia...they were treating me with all kinds of antibiotics....then they found out i had sarc and gave me steriods instead....Im not a doctor or anything, but i know deep down that his sarc played a key part in it too. anyway...RIP Bernie...

I am also very, very sad about Bernic Mac. This article is pretty interesting.

At first, I did not understand how Bernic Mac's publicist was saying the pneumonia was not Sarc-related, but after reading the post before this, I have a better understanding. The sad thing is, people will think his death had nothing to do with Sarcoidosis which we all know is not true. Unfortunately, that may add to the ignorance concerning this disease and it's effects.

My prayers are with the Mac family and with all of you.

Wishing you the best,

Delores

Wow..I am still in shock about his death. And so upset that people know so little about this condition to say it was not related to his death. I pray that they will report the correct info concerning the relation of the Sarc and the medicine suppression of his immune system and any damage done previously to his lungs and pulmonary system. I hate he died, but maybe his death will be the spark needed for this disease to be brought out of the closet and more funding and research can be the result.

We will all miss Bernie Mac terribly. I do wonder however why the condition of his Sarcoidosis is being played down. It was anounced he had it in 2005 and had for 20 years. At that time he had to take a break from work and gained weight due to prednisone. Now we find he has pneumonia and has been ill for some time. He was actually in the hospital since July 24. He was also on immunosuppresants at the time of his death. To me that does not sound like a disease that is in "remission". Truly he did die from pneumonia but which was caused by the immunosuppresants and compromised by the Sarcoidosis. We will miss him terribly he was hysterical and real...I just wonder why they won't bring this disease to light....

Bernie Mac was so much more than a comedian and actor. He was every person with this dreadful disease. He represented every mother's child who has been diagnosed with this disease. We who knew of his sarcoidosis watched closely, and maybe read articles about him to extract the latest medical information. We all saw him as a healthy outgoing person, but wondered if his scans and X-rays looked like ours. I certainly was disappointed that for whatever reason, he wasn't able to speak out more about this autoimmune disease during his lifetime. Now as a person with multiorgan involvement, including sinuses and nose, I have to speak out. DO ORGANS WORK AS WELL AFTER REMISSION???
I had at least 5 years active sarcoid in my nose and sinuses. After reconstructive surgeries, and prednisone therapy, my sinuses work, but not well and not without pain. Any sinus infection or sinusitis requires up to a month of constant care and monitoring and medications including steroid injections and oral steroids. IF everything works....and it doesn't always.....I still have to endure incredible pain because DAMAGED TISSUE DOES NOT REACT THE SAME AS HEALTHY TISSUE. It isn't flexible, or moist. It can't swell with fluids as well as healthy tissue. After prednisone therapy, what's left in many areas...if not the whole organ is scarring!!!
These morons who report on Bernie Mac, don't have the luxury of reporting the truth. There is no money in it. If WE were as large in numbers as cancer or diabetes sufferers, there would be more money put into our research. So sorry that it takes the death of one of our foot soldiers to have the word Sarcoidosis mentioned in the news. This means that there is a small window of opportunity to make people aware of autoimmune diseases, granulomatous diseases and in particular....sarcoidosis. This may be a good time to ask those questions of your medical provider.
Yep, I'm going to rent a Bernie Mac movie and laugh because he was here to entertain us. My favorite is Mr. 3000, the ageing baseball player who.... just before retirement, discovered that he really missed having 3000.....by 3 hits. Great physical comedy
Peace

Hi, I just found out and I'm really sad.
Besides for obvious reasons, my sadness comes from the fact that there aren't very many celebrities out there representing us (either by choice or just by their personal business getting leaked out).
When people like Bernie Mac and Karen Duffy are out there and working and having a life, it makes me feel like I go on with my life and can have that too. They're doing ok, and so can I.
So when a young person like Bernie Mac or Reggie White (NFL star) dies, its like a knife in the stomach reminding me that sarcoidosis can kill and it can contribute to killing. Its like a mortality wake up call.
Blessings to the Mac family.
