Gluten free isn't working for me, anyone else?

I have been on a gluten free diet now for about six weeks and I am not seeing any improvement. As a matter of fact, I think I'm getting worse. So have I just not been on it long enough? Or has anyone else tried the gluten free thing and failed? And yes, I have been very strict about it... so that isn't the issue. All feedback would be welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Try cutting out/down the carbs. Avoid all starches; potatoes, breads, cookies, pasta. It has helped me feel a bit better.

It didn't work for me either. I didn't stay on it as long as you though, I think it was about 3 weeks.

I did the Celiac disease diet taking all wheat and gluten out except corn for 4 weeks. No cheating at all and did not see a signifigant difference in symptoms. There was less discomfort in BM but naseau and stuff was the same. I gave it up but pay more attention to not eat as much bread/flour which helps. I was disappointed too!

A gluten free diet is great for those who need it but not for those who have no need for it and I for one don't feel the average sarker has a need for it. I have suffered or tolerated this disease for 18 years and have been on death's door a couple of times but diet has not been a factor in either cause or cure. I am now in remission and can eat or drink anything except pavement or water without a splash of vodka (I think, I have not tried either) So enjoy your favourite foods to moderation, you will know when you have overdone it, the people at the buffet counter will pull out the riot guns and steer you away, or the pepper spray at the all you can eat counter, is a dead giveaway. I didn't try the Gluten-Free Diet. I looked into the Anti-Inflammation Diet. There are several good books out there that are written regarding the subject. The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Anti-Inflammation Diet by Christopher P. Cannon and Elizabeth Vierck (Paperback - Dec 5, 2006) and another one is The Inflammation-Free Diet Plan by Monica Reinagel (Paperback - Apr 30, 2007). See if these diet plans works for you.

Yes I am the wheat/gulten free advocate, but I am beginning to see a pattern on this. The gluten/wheat free seems to help those of us who have gastro sarc. I saw an almost immediate improvement after only 5 days. I have spleen and liver sarc and it really does help spleen sarc. I don't know why but it does.

As a side plus it also stopped the achey joints - hands knees and feet. If it doesn't help you then don't continue it.

I have also found that the Anti-Inflammation diet helps, but this was not so dramatic for me as it seems that I have been on an Anti-Inflammatory diet most of my adult life. Lately I have just been trying to cut down on chemical additives in things like salad dressings and making my own dressings.

I do believe we are what we eat, and that is one reason I don't eat turkey. LOL

If it's of any help you might try the anti-inflammatory diet that I have finally posted. It really is an entire change in how and what you eat. I have also installed a reverse osmosis water filtration system in my kitchen to help insure that I'm not getting toxins from the water.

I eat a very healthy diet and try to avoid processed foods. As many auto-immune sufferers do have a gluten problem, rather than testing, my specialist recommended that I try it. I tried it for a few months and had the same results as you. I felt terrible and I know why. I am extremely active and, unlike a lot of ill informed people, I know that unprocessed carbohydrates are an essential part of my diet. Unfortunately most of the gluten free, readily available cereals and products are far too processed for my liking and therefore I did not have a satisfactory intake of my much needed unprocessed carbohydrates. As soon as I returned to my normal way of eating, I felt much better. There are foods that actually trigger our symptoms that are easy to avoid. I do this and I also eat a diet high in Omega 3, which is very good for reducing inflammation.
Before people recommend that people avoid "carbs", they should actually research what one is. Simple carbohydrate is the one which should be limited, eg. white flour product, sugar, etc. Complex carbohydrates, eg. grainy breads, sweet potato, brown rice, etc. should always be included.

you should also take out wheat and soy-two of the most causes of inflammation. you must make sure you are eating vegetables, fruit and drinking plenty of water. have been on this lifestyle for almost 2 years and have lost over 70 pounds. It is a lifestyle that takes a lot of time and planning, but worth the trouble-still having some problems when i cheat and eat white or wheat products, but overall feeling much better. and make sure you read every label-things that say gluten free have soy lecetin in them. there are a lot of products out on the market for gluten/wheat and soy free so just keep looking.

I, too, am a gluten free advocate. It's worked for me. But I had Lofgren's syndrome really bad-swelling in my legs and painful nodules all over my shins. In about a week after going gluten free I felt a ton better and the nodules were completely gone and the majority of the swelling was gone. However, as someone else mentioned on this site that is what worked for me but it may not be right for everyone. I hope you are feeling better soon. Good luck.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease couple of months ago, so it was mandatory for me to go on gluten-free diet. I did not have a lot of symptoms from celiac but gluten-free diet did not work well for my joint pain. I agree with Krissy that many gluten-free replacements are highly processed, which is not good.

I have to say that when I went gluten free I did not eat a lot of replacement food. I just gave up bread, crackers etc. and learned to eat different things. And there are a lot of things that have always been gluten free but just did not advertise it. Rice Chex is a good example.

It has helped my gastro symptoms. I have not noticed any difference in my lymph node or lung symptoms. I even have a red bridge every now and then and no more bloating, or diarhea.

I have had this disease for 15 years......neuro-sarcoid. I have often tried half heartedly a wheat free diet, but this is the first time I have seen anyone else come up with any connections between coeliac and sarcoid. (I have a granddaughter who is a coeliac) I always feel better without wheat, but worry that it is all in the mind. So often I am made to feel that I am imagining my symptoms. Not by the Brompton Hospital in London........they are marvelous and make me feel normal!!!!! It seems to have gone through my whole system attacking different parts of me - Attacking nerves and big muscles at the moment and I cannot stand or walk without extreme pain. Albeit my feet and lower limbs feel like mushy peas. I work long hours as I will not let this beat me, I know it will go into remission at some time again hopefully soon.
