Fungal infection question

0 Recommendations

Hi,

Did anyone taking MTX and prednisone ever get fungal infections and were there any complications?

I have a 4 year old daughter with early-onset sarcoidosis. Her 11yr old stepsister visits every 2nd weekend, and last time she came, she had an odd rash, so I went to see a pharmacist and she believes my stepdaughter has ringworms (fungal infection). She advised that since my 4 year old with sarc is taking MTX, prednisone, they should not be in contact together since her immune system might not be able to fight this fungal infection, which in the worst case could lead to blood infection.

Thank you all!

I had repeated yeast infections while on them. I was also getting them from my remicade infusions so I have started taking a prescription called nystatin daily to help fight off the yeast.

As the pharmacist said both of the drugs your daughter is on can lower her immune system so I would follow the advice and wait until her stepsister has her ringworm taken care off before letting them be together. No since in taking extra risks.

Oh how easy I get ringworm. Argh! Two friends both got ringworm, and they shared both times. That is one way, the other is that I changed deodorant once because my original deodorant had something in it that is listed as a possible cause of sarc, where I got this information, don't ask.

Harsh soap or changes in deodorant can strip the skin of its little natural fighters and you can too can have ringworm. Ringworm in the armpit is not your friend.

My doctor said oh great no deodorant for you till that heals. Like when she says it is healed, not when I say so. She hoped I didn't give the other pit the fungus too. No changing deodorant. (makes mental note)

So I walked around with one medicated stinky pit. I was not a happy camper either. People that I knew that loved me I would raise my arm and tell them to smell that, sometimes we hurt the ones we love the most. HAHA! They swore they couldn't smell me! I am not buying that, they just didn't want me to go back to my deodorant.

I feel naked without it, well in that case half naked. So I got desperate and this secret is between us and me, I went out and got a spray can of my deodorant. Sure I was stuck with hairy pits, but I wasn't gonna be stuck with one stinky one. Can't cross contaminate with spray. I know about global warming, but that one pit was making a bigger hole. Might have lost a tree in the rain forest because of that fungus. I might have saved a small village by getting the spray.

Then one friend told me that I could get breast cancer by using that deodorant. You know the one that keeps me ringworm free, so I tried another and got ringworm again. Both pits this time. My doctor could barely sit on her stool when she saw those pits. Well I would rather her laugh at me then throw her hands up in disgust.

Can the 11 year old have a special outing? That does not include the 4 year old. This way the 11 year old does not feel ousted. We don't know how long it will take for the ringworm to heal. Could take two weeks, could take a month. It might depend how bad the case is, or how the immune system works on the 11 year old. I am not a fungus expert, even though I have had my share.

For now, I don't touch stray cats, or dogs. Oh yeah and if I notice anything on a friend, well we have to be long distance friends till they get rid of it.

Does Nystatin come in a pill form? The liquid makes me sick to taste it.

Thanks for your replies..

Both your experiences sound awful!! But reading about it does help...I sometimes think I worry for nothing, but reality kicks in when things like these happen...my daughter is taking very strong medication...

We surely don't want the 11 yr old to feel ousted, which is why my husband is taking her to the clinic tonight. Otherwise, it will never get treated, she's had these lesions for over a month and the mother has done nothing about it yet.

Take care

Hi-
I was on them both for a year. Yeast is the main offender. My skin became infected and it smelled no matter how many times I bathed.
Have her take folic acid. I also took Biotin capsules and lots of vitamin C. Find out how much is the maximum dose of these vitamins she can take daily. The folic acid will help her with bacterial infections, biotin will help her not loose her hair and the vitamin C will help her fight off colds. Be prepared for her to get every virus and cold known to man. Do everything you can to protect her even if she has to wear a mask in public. Get the flu shot too. Your whole family should get vaccinated.
Have her wash her hands with just mild soap, do not use alcohol based antibacterial stuff cause it will make her skin more subseptable to infection over timecause it strippes the natural oil that protects the skin. I was on Methotrexate and preds for a year and it was the best thing I have done so far. I feel better that I have in 6 years. hang in ther with her, she will be more and more tired as she takes the MTX. Hope it works! Take Care, S.D.

Dyflucam once a week. is a pill I took for the whole time I was on MTX and preds.
