Dr. says not to eat night shade vegetables

My Dr. has told me for some time now to not eat night shade veggies, which I'll never be able to do because everything I eat is on my Dr.'s list of DON'T EAT.. I found this web site and I clicked on Diet near the bottom left portion of the page. It has a lot of good information.

Hope everyone finds this helpful, if we can't change all of what we eat, maybe a few changes would do us some good. I think everything is worth trying at least once!

Louise....I hope your gallbladder issues have subsided....did you experience any kind of pain? Can I ask which joints were/are bothering you? Blueberry....that sounds great....have heard that helps with alzheimers/mental decline as well. I eat organic frozen blueberries (big bag from CostCo) in rice cereal most mornings. I agree with you on keeping the animals!

Mary May.....Citrus/Nuts/Spinach/Asparagus....Depending on which list you are looking at, these can be found on the nickel free diet. I had metal testing done and had a contact dermatitis reaction (aka granulomatous reaction of the skin) to nickel. Per the allergist....for some people who have skin reactions to nickel, they have found limiting nickel intake in food can help with stomach issues and skin rashes....but just because you are allergic to nickel does not necessarily mean the diet will help you. No canned foods is step number one....especially canned acidic foods. Before I read about the nickel free diet, I started buying this brand of tomatoes since they don't add calcium chloride as a preservative (hypercalcuria issues) and because there are well documented health problems from BPA lined cans....some companies are going to start phasing out BPA...I think Campbells said they will by 2014 and this brand uses glass instead:

I somewhat disagree with having spinach and greens on the nickel free diet list since they have found that iron and other nutrients in spinach and other greens actually prevent the body from absorbing too much of the other harmful metals/minerals. I am worn out from my gluten/dairy free diet but still having issues...I think soy might be a problem for me...Don't know if I can keep doing all these diets to find out what foods are the problem. Interestingly enough I think most of the nightshade foods are also on the intense nickel free diet. For the toned down version, it's mostly coffee, chocolate, beans, nuts, soy, shellfish and certain fish. The frustrating part is every site / university has a different list.

Thank you Truus, regarding the asparagus. My mom has been sick in bed for the past couple of days... she has been having problems for a wild now and they just tested and was found to have thyroid problems.

We eat asparagus many times a week as what we thought was a healthy choice because we are trying to eat dark colours veggies and trying to avoid Potatos as so many diets say to avoid white food items... we do however make cauliflower.

I'm going to stop serving Asparagus for a while and see how my mom feels. I'll let you know.

WHY don't Doctors hand you a list of items you may want to avoid now that you have been giving a diagnonsis with something.

Why do we have to go research all this stuff that others have already figured out. Why invent the wheel again.

Can't all these doctors just get along and do the job they signed up to do... take care of people.

Couldn't agree with you more on why doctors don't give us a list. Or at least have the nurses well trained in nutrition so they can help the patient. I'm not sure how medical school is now but my parents said they received no training in nutrition in medical school.

Hello Ave, my neck always hurts, wrists and knees and ankles mostly. but all over pain is that the Sarc or the FibroM.

When I was having the Gallbladder problems I felt very sick all the time.. the pain would come after a big meal and at night it would be so bad I even used my long armed massager and would hold it behind me to try to loosen the knot of pain I would have a the back right side of my shoulder blade.. also the front middle of my chest, felt like I was having a heart attack.

I'm one of those people that waits to the very last minute to seek medical help.. partially because when you go to the Dr,,, I've said for about a year. I really get bad pains in my chest and it feels like a heart attack.. and she would say.. your heart is fine and not send me for tests....

even the second time I went to the emergency department in the middle of the night, I didn't get seen until the morning of course I was feeling a bit better by then because I had thrown up all night. I finalyy explain the ER Dr that I saw the week before said to come back if I still had the same problems which I did and the idiot first Dr felt foolish that he let me go after a really wrong diagnosis.. he

said all I needed was to flush my system out (intestines and colon) and I'd be fine... So the second doctor I told him that he wasn't taking me seriously... so they did an ultra sound and my gallbladder was totally impacted with stones and I'm not sure if it was busted or about to rupture... so a Surgeon removed it that night.

I almost punched the second Dr in the face when he came into the room and looked right at me and said.. I WAS RIGHT , it is your gallbladder... I want to grab him and say...NO, you wanted me to go home as there wasn't anything wrong with me, he said this before even examining me. I didn't hurt the little Dr because my father was in the room.. and I felt it might not be a good idea to upset a person that is responsible for your care!

I hope this helps you... remember you have the right to speak up and be your own advocate if you feel you are not being taken seriously.. let them know it. Take care, Louise

I already gave up pasta and garlic bread so as not to get kicked out of our club....eggplant parm stays in!!!!!

Besides it's my "go to" comfort food...only another Italian would understand that. LOL!

I agree with you...sometimes I feel like my head is going to burst...but then I can't help myself from constantly reading about this stuff. Sometimes I just want to say f... it and not try anymore. But I have a natural interest in nutrition and have very slowly modified things over the years. I don't think I could have made all the changes at once. Many of the changes are easy now...I have my go to items. I hear you on the eggplant parm and I'm not even Italian! Can you eat brown rice pasta? Jovial makes a good brown rice capellini that is made in Italy.

So glad I to know I wasn't the only one getting overwhelmed with info. I actually don't miss the pasta or bread as much as I thought. And I've been a vegetarian for a long time so it just seems like there isn't much more for me to give up. I don't eat a lot of sugar anyway so that isn't a huge problem for me and I really think...all things in moderation is the philosophy that works best for me.

Hope you continue to learn and enjoy the changes you are making...smart move not to make them all at once by the way!

Good philosophy. I started changing my diet because I grew up eating horribly. I never gained weight so I never thought to address it until my health started to nosedive. I wouldn't keep looking for a solution if I didn't have stomach pains/issues all the time. There are so many diets out there...it would be unhealthy to do too many...I'm searching for the food that's giving me the issues...maybe I'll find it's not food and then just stuff my face with ice cream. Kudos to you on being vegetarian...I am not that strong. Best to you!

Once you have achieved full abstination and have made a decision about the results, you should re-introduce the foods one at a time 1-2 weeks apart to determine which might be causing the problems.

I don't think you can blame doctors for this.

The US and many other western cultures is a country of excess and has gotten away from basics when it comes to diet. Too much prepared food, too much additives, not enough fresh fruit and veggies and not enough variation.

Most foods do not present much of a problem, unless someone is extremely sensitive, if eaten in moderation and varied. Somehow we have gotten it into our heads that if something is considered healthy more of it must be even more healthy. This seems logical but isn't. By oversaturating your body with specific nutrients you can upset the balance of nature.

Haven't been able to locate the info on oxygen uptake yet but found this. Knew there was a reason I prefer raw vegetables.


Spinach has very high levels of vitamin C and is rich in riboflavin, folate, magnesium, vitamin A, potassium, as well as vitamins B6, E and thiamin. Spinach is a rich source of iron, but much of this is unavailable for absorption due to oxalic acid, high levels of which can cause gout and kidney stones. So spinach should be eaten in moderation and mixed with other vegetables

Only when spinach is cooked and processed, however, that the oxalic acid turns INORGANIC and become harmful. Therefore, limit your consumption of cooked or processed spinach.

Spinach is one of the foods that is most commonly associated with allergies. Probably because of its very tightly-packed nutrients. Any one of its agents could trigger an allergy in a person who happens to be allergy to something.

The main toxicity of oxalic acid is due to kidney failure, which arises because it causes precipitation of solid calcium oxalate (the main component of kidney stones).

Contact with oxalic acid can also cause JOINT PAIN due to the formation of similar precipitates in the joints

Well I don't know if it was coincidence or not but I tried to follow this suggestion yesterday. I felt no fatigue and joint pain until after dinner. Breakfast was soy milk and banana, lunch was 2 boiled eggs, baby carrots with some lite honey mustard dressing. I did cheat a little with a few cashews and 1 gluten free pumpkin chocolate chip cookie. Dinner was steak with butternut squash cooked with diced tomatoes. That's when my day changed. So I will continue to try to stay away from nightshades, but for me too that's what I live on for staples. Just thought I would provide some feedback.

LOL heck then I could basically get both by just wearing my CPAP machine, as I use Distilled water in it, now if I could just hook it up to oxygen instead of just room air... I could give up eating all together...
And I bet I would still gain weight month after month... OK I need to continue taking me medications

I did ask my Dr what the heck I was allowed to eat considering she had me stop eating things with gluten, then nightshade veg. Doesn't want me to have caffeine... she even barked at me about drinking decafe tea saying I might as well drink the cafinated tea it hasn't been processed as much as the all cafeine? Not sure of my spelling right now as I can hardly see the screen.. If I work on the computer too long I get total double vision.

I wonder if that counts as typing twice the amount of words per minute.

Hope everyone is having a nice day and are able to find a moment where they are able to look past or through their pain even if just for a few moments.

If no one has tried this before, we learned it at a Cancer center... called Laugh Therapy... so you stand around in a circle you can do it with your family or a couple of friends.... one person starts the group off by putting their hands on their tummy and sort of like Santa Clause would do.... say... HA HA HA HO HO HO>> HA HA HA HOO HOO HOO and some the next person will without thinking start to laugh and join in and soon everyone is laughing... we would laugh until it hurt basically because everyone looked so foolish, laughing ...

I believe it was written somewhere, that you don't even have to really make any noise while laughing as long as your breathing is replicating laughter and you have the same diaphram moments, it is also beneficial to your health..

We, unintentionally, did laugh therapy in yoga class this evening. There is one man in a room full of woman (actually he's the most flexible of all of us).

Anyway there is one woman who can not look at him without laughing and tonight she was directly across from him. She's choking on the laughter looking at him, he turns to me (standing next to him) with a look of of, "what's with the goofball" which makes me have to swallow a giggle while I am looking at our yoga master who in turn . . . . .so it went around the room.

Best class to date !

Ave, it doesn't even have to be the Dr's supplying the information. But if they are aware of these things at least set you up with a nutritonist, or again specialist. My Dr still hasn't found me a specialist. but I will put the pressure on her when I go for my physical.
