What can I do to get a normal nights sleep?

0 Recommendations

Arg, this is so frustrating... I never get a full nights sleep....
<p/>
I cant remember the last time I woke up refreshed.... Once I am able to get to sleep, I am good for the night, but getting to sleep is the challenge. So far, I have tried:

  1. Stopped consumption of caffeine by 4PM.
  2. Sleep Aids (Tylenol PM, Ambien, etc...)
  3. Relaxation Techniques
  4. Reading
  5. Watching TV
  6. Warm Milk
  7. Counting Sheep

The results have been mixed. Cutting down caffeine has helped, but I cant cut it out completely because I need it when I show up to work with 3 hrs sleep from the night before.

Ambien is great, but between the addiction issues and limited amounts doctors prescribe, its not a long term solution. Relaxation techniques just don't work for me. Not sure why, but totally have given up on them.

Reading usually works, but requires about an hour a night to get me calm enough to fall asleep, but the downside is that a good book will keep me up for hours.... so its a mixed bag.

Was kidding about the warm milk (yuck) and counting sheep.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Get a $10 crockpot from Target or WalMart, fill it with water and put in 10 drops of pure 100% Lavender Essential Oil. Plug it up and put it on high. I sleep through the night like a baby. I also use a CPAP Mask to keep me from snoring because I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

Other sleep techniques I use include: a warm bath, a cup of warm Roobios Tea (I sell that) with honey or maple syrup, a salt lamp (I sell that also), and listening to instrumental music 30 minutes before bed. Another thing I do is to turn off all electronic equipment -- computer, 1 hour before bed; and TV 30 minutes before bed.

For heart health, we need at least 7 hours of sleep each night and no longer than 9 hours.

Someone "loaned" me the New "Wesley Sleep Program: Biblical Rest without Medications." I had had problems falling asleep for years, and had tried pills (which worked for a while, but I didn't want to be dependent upon them forever) and even alcohol. But the Wesley Sleep Program is a CD that calms me slowly with some encouraging Bible verses with the dreamy music behind it. The first night was great...I fell asleep quickly. Now I use it evrey night and have weened myself off of the medications. It may not be for everyone, but it worked for me. They have a website with more information, so I recommend if it sounds good to give it a try. By the way, the person who loaned me the program hasn't asked for it back, so I intend to keep it.
