Productive at 1AM - Delirious At 4 AM

Ok, so I was talking with a co-worker the other day about the mental fuzziness that go thru once you start becoming sleep deprived. His issue for the day was somnipathy infantias AKA 1 week old infant. :-)

My problem is the thin line between 10pm-3am when I am actually most productive and the quick downward slide that starts around 3:30am. Then the decision must be made: push thru the night and make it till about 5pm the next day OR sleep and risk sleeping thru the alarm.

Anyone else ever notice this?

Yeah, that's me exactly! Generally, if I go with less sleep I can usually wake up by using several alarms (often the neighbors bang on the wall and that usually works on the days that the alarms don't). So I live on a few hours of sleep per night and either nap in the afternoon, and/or gradually build up such a sleep debt that after about 10-14 days I can fall asleep pretty fast at a normal time for that ONE night. And the nights when I just skip sleep because it is too late, it's not necessarily any easier to sleep at a "normal" time the next night, unless I already had a huge sleep debt before the missed night.

I posted links to some information sheets on circacian rhythm disorders (Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome) on the "Journal" section of this website that fellow night-owls might like to see (didn't want to double-post it here).

If anyone out there has tried the bright light or light box therapy, please post your experiences, whether it worked, did you find a reputable company, etc. Thanks!
