tooth extraction

0 Recommendations

Hi,
Today the dentist told me that I have to have a tooth extracted because the cavity is too large. I am afraid, not only because I'm afraid of going to the dentist, but because with the scleroderma I'm afraid there are healing issues etc that I should be aware of. I'm sure, some of you have gone through this so if you could help me giving me some advice of things to watch out for. Unfortunately, I don't have a rheumatologist to ask because I have switched rheumatologist and I have my first appointment after the tooth extraction.
Thanks,
Ana

Hi Barb,

I am so sorry that you have to have all your teeth extracted, and here I am complaining about one tooth!
Keep the faith and I will also have you in my prayer.

Love,

Ana

I went to the dentist yesterday, I am still having pain in a tooth that I had a root canal on in July and the tooth still hurts and they think it might have a crack -- a couple thousand dollars on that tooth already and now they want to pull it and I will have to get a bridge -- another couple of thousand dollars! Thanks for mentioning the anti-biotics to take before they pull the tooth. Because I have so much bone loss they have to send me to an oral surgeon to pull it and so I will have to ask them before if I need anti-biotics.

Thanks!

Hi Ann,
Thanks for sharing. I have a question: how do you know you have bone loss? I ask you because the dentist that is going to pull my tooth I have met him once, and I don't know how good he is. My regular dentist is in another country. I have a plane ticket in 2 weeks but they tell me I should get this problem fixed before getting on a plane, so I'm stuck with this new dentist. Therefore, everything I can find out to help him do a good job, the better!
Thanks,

Ana

Could you get a couple of more opinions? Is there possibly any way you could keep that tooth? Lynn

I had a tooth extracted a couple of months ago. It had had a root canal but cracked. I compared the price of a bridge and having a post and a tooth put in and they came out very close. The bridge requires putting crowns on the two adjacent teeth. The post and new tooth effect only the hole left by removing the tooth. You can't get underneath the tooth with a post. I am going back next week to prepare for the new tooth.

ANA1965 I had two molars lower right side extracted.
They were 1 month apart. Healing was no problem.
I can't chew on the right side because of the two missing teeth. I hope I don't wear out the back teeth on the left side. I have another tooth that is loose next to the two 2 teeth on the other R side. My dentist said I didn't have enough bone to do a permanent tooth. The other factor is the cost. Are you going to be able to have dentures made? Some times the dental schools need patients. to work on and they are not the first year students. I hope things will work out for you.

I am not sure I follow neveryone's stories, but this was my experience. I had a upper molar shatter. They pulled it and I didn't know that you weren't supposed to use a straw to drink....it sucks out the clot on the extraction site. Because of that I had a ton of pain and slow healing.

I had an implant done. This required bone graft to get more bone stability for the tooth. They routinely do that on upper molars. It took a long time and I questioned my decision throughout. Now I am glad I have the implant. I am 45 and have a real stong long lasting tooth.

Depending on the site of extraction is usually what type of dentist does the work. I had a dental surgeon do mine because it was a molar and in a million little pieces. Bone loss is common. On the upper they can reinforce bone. I do not know if they can do that on the lower. To add bone they cut a flap in your gum and "inject" it into the site needing reinforcment. Then they wait several months for the bone "take".

Thank you everybody for answering, it really helps to hear other people's experiences. In my case I am worried that I cannot open my mouth well and the skin in my cheek/mouth opening is very tight so I don't know how a dentist can work since it's the last molar!
And I also worry about healing since I have ulcers on my feet that haven't healed in many months (but of course I also know that circulation in the extremities is a whole other thing).
I have to wait to Monday and see what the dentist says (hopefully he can save the tooth as Lynn suggested).
Thanks again,

Ana

I will have 4 teeth extracted on the 20th of this month.
I am terrified but I know that I have no other way around it because they are very decayed at the base under fillings.
I will have this done in the hospital by a Dental surgeon.
I will also have some bone graft put in the extraction area on my lower jaw .
The gums are shrinking the most on the jaw.
Did anybody had problems with the limited opening of the mouth?
Good luck with your extraction!

Adina
