Please help pain on ribs and side

Please help me. I have had severe pain in my right side where my ribs are. Also on the right front where my ribs are also. I went to the doc and they took x-rays and she called me and said I don't have any fractures!!!! She is only guessing but she feels it could be the scleroderma acting up. This all started right before Christmas and I did do a lot that I normally don't do. However, I have been in severe pain since then. I am on Vicodin which is only taking the edge off. I trust my doc but I really need to see if anyone has any ideas on this? Thank you all so very much and My prayers are always with my SD friends!!!

I had this mysterious pain also. Massage (myofascial release) and stretching and deep breathing exercises (along with pain killers) seemed to help. Rubbing peppermint oil or some kind of muscle rub on it seems to help too.

My doctor prescribed the massage as part of physical therapy.

Later on that year a lung specialist told me that some of my decreased lung function might be coming from overly tight muscles and weak muscles in my back and lung area.

Were you doing anything 3 or 4 days ago that could have caused torn cartilage? I've been told that a cartilage tear in the rib cage won't necessarily show up on x-ray. Three days after such an injury is when the pain gets really bad.

There arfe so many different things that can cause a Muscle,Ligament,Skin or any of the of the Tissues Tear of some kind or other. Sitting up in bed,a hard Cough or a simple jerky movement can cause something to happen. I ended up pulling a Hamstring washing off in the shower, and I was a lot more healthier when it happened.

Hi,
I'm thinking possibly inflammation in the connective tissue surrounding and in between the rib cage. I have had this pain, massage and anti-inflammatories helped me. So, when your doctor said, it's the Sclero, this might have been what he/she meant, idk, but it's worth asking about.
It may go away by itself in a few days, but I know it hurts when it hurts! Sorry.

I've had this a couple of times too and the rheumy related it to SD. It is the most severe pain I've experienced because it just grabs at you with the slightest movement.

best of luck

I have the same kind of pain and some times I get also muscle spasms on both sides of my rib cage.I also have pain on the ribs under my breast.
My Rheumatologist told me that this is because of the Scleroderma and my lung problems .I am taking 5 mg prednisone and even that doesn't help with the pain.

Pain in my side is what led to my diagnosis of SD. What was causing the pain was never found. Just took pain killers and was careful to not overdo for awhile.
Hope it get better soon.

Thank you all so very much for all your responses. The Pain in my rib cage on the right and underneath the breast but lower all happened Dec 23rd. I still have the pain. It makes sense that maybe cartilage is torn, etc. This isn't permenent is it? Pain meds don't help and I think I'm looking now for something to hold on to..like some good news that it won't last much longer lol.

Again..tyvm for all your responses. I really appreciate this board so much and all the friends here that I have made.

I had nasty pain in that general area (lower ribs, right side) and it turned out to be gallstones. Has that been considered? A simple endoscopic procedure (ERCP) took care of it.

Hi Robpappy: I have had this pain for a few years, have had consultations, x-rays, and many different answers but nothing concrete. It is so excruciating that when I get this I can't move. This can be brought on by a slight movement to my right, holding my gg child, or coughing. It does usually start from my right side and under my breast, like someone is stabbing me with a knife. I still don't know what causes this other than the SD. Can't get a straight answer because all my doctors don't know either. I have learned to live with it and try not to have drastic movements, but even being careful brings it on unexpectedly. Sorry I have not been helpful in my answer, It's just that you are not alone with this problem. Hugs, Bev.

Last year I had rib area pain. I wore a lidocaine patch which my rheumy prescribed. It went away after a few months. I also used a hot water bottle before I got the patch. It gave a little relief.

Thank you so much Bev and Purple ( I thanked the others earllier!!!).
I tried the lidocaine patch and vicodin but it doesn't help. I have a problem where pain meds don't work for me and I have the opposite effect on me. I get wide awake!!!! Even morphine, fentynal..all of them.

That you for sharing all of you as it helps to know that i'm not alone. I will pray for all of us tonight that we will be pain free soon. I think we are strong but it helps to have a break in the pain to get stronger to deal with the next wave...at least that is what I need.

Thanks so much all....

Robpappy, I fell and broke ribs and possibly some cartilage also in 1997. That's when the docs told me that the broken ribs showed on x-rays, but that there could be broken cartilage also that wouldn't show. The pain was so bad I could hardly breathe. I could only sleep in a Lazy Boy chair because there was no way I could get in and out of bed. The first two days after the fall the pain was not very bad, but starting with the third day, it was excruciating. That's when the bone ends are softening to try to re-knit together.

It took a few weeks but the pain gradually disappeared. Then when the scleroderma really hit me in 2001 I started noticing that every now and then the old injury site is a little tender to the touch. I don't know why that should be, but it is.

I broke 4 ribs in '06 and swear it was the worst pain I've ever had and it started on the 3rd day as well with spasms and pain radiating into my breast. Now with the Scleroderma, I get this tightnening feeling in that same area and on the left where I've had no injury. When I asked the Rhemie, she didn't know. I have found out so many commonalities with this support group and when I bring some of them up to my doctors, they're rather surprised. Don't think anyone knows as much as we'd like them to as every case is so individual.

Thank you both for your replies...so sorry to hear what has happened to you with ribs being broken.

Skeeter...I do the same thing with my docs..as I hear " its probably SD but we do know for sure what it is"....I research stuff and then bring it to the docs. They are always very happy to get this information because they know this site is excellent for people sharing what is going on with them.

Daisy...I have noticed that if I have an old injury, it tends to flair up and cause some "discomfort" at times. But this one is a new one and is a doosey ( not sure I spelled that right..lol).

Thanks again and prayers are always with my sd!!!

I've been getting that inexplicable side pain too for some weeks, it comes and goes, when it hurts it feels like if I had been kicked on the ribs they are a little bit tender at touch, i don't take any pain killers i just wait till it goes away.

Mine is like a knife that is jabbed into my right side in the ribs. I also have the same pain under my right breast but in the rib bone area. As I said, the x-rays showed nothing so I have to assume at this point that it is torn cartilage. I have to take pain pills especially at night. I've had this since dec. 23rd and just seems not to be getting better yet. I will let you know.

Thank you all again

Maybe a chiropractor can help you. I go when I can't stretch it out and it bothers me for more than a week.

Mine has relieved radiating pain in my arms, put ribs back in place and relieved neck and back pain. He only charges me 20 dollars a visit whether my insurance pays or not.

Robpappy,
I have pain in the area you are describing, but mine is caused by my liver. When I had some stomach surgery last year, my surgeon told me I had an extremely large liver and it looked sick and nasty. When my rheumy got the report, she set up an echo for my liver (and some blood tests) Diagnosis confirmed Autoimmune Hepatitis. Fibrosis has set in. Treated with high doses of prednisone. My rheumy thinks it could be caused by the Tracleer I took for PAH. I hope this will give you another avenue to investigate on your severe side pain.
I will pray for you.
Soozi
