I'm very sorry to hear that your baby is sick and in the NICU. Sickle Cell trait is an inherited condition in which both hemoglobin A and S are produced in the red blood cells. Sickle cell trait is not a type of sickle cell disease. People with sickle cell trait are generally healthy. Please see the following for more informaiton:
http://www.sicklecelldisease.org/about_scd/faqs.phtml#trait
I hope this is helpful. Best wishes to your baby.
Our son, who is now 13 and was adopted at the age of 3, has sickle cell trait... he is, and has been very healthy, and it has never, ever been a concern for him or us.. hope this helps to ease your mind a little...Lisa
