Hi - my mom (79) has had polymyalgia rheumatica for over 10 years. It does not go away...the pain is eased by taking prednisone. She has slowly over time stopped taking it because it causes kidney damage and the PMR seems to be in remission now. Although it can always come back.

She had rheumatic fever when she was a child and has had a host of auto immune disorders and problems because of it including her heart arrythmia. Despite what the doctors say, my mom still insists the PMR was triggered by stress and systemic trauma.

Her PMR pain is almost non-existant...although she still has some bad days with fatigue and minor pain...she is not taking prednisone.

Your husband's condition should improve with medication. Hope this helps.

Hi, My mum; now 75 had PMR for 8 years. She was treated with prednisone. Last year her PMR tests started improving and she is now off the steroids and her tests are normal. The course of the illness seems to vary greatly with each individual - some come right within a year or two, with others it hangs around for much longer. Good luck

What kind of test do they run to find out if you had PMR???

The tests used are the ESR and CRP; more info in the links below. Whilst they aren't spefic for PMR they indicate there is inflammation in the body and coupled with the symptoms are used to aid diagnosis.

My pleasure. I hope that it helps!
