Marine Bacteria Infection

Does anyone know about marine bacteria infections.. My husband 48 yrs old a fisherman by trade has started with this in Nov. 2008. We are at the point of surgery 3 times its on his hand and middle finger..A pic/IV in his other arm running IV antibodics for 4 weeks and anitbodics by mouth...It has been a nightmare..MY REAL CONCERN IS..CAN THIS GET INTO HIS BLOOD STREAM... he never ran fever and its never had redness..ONLY swelling and lots of it..The swelling goes down and the minute he uses the hand it comes back...Can this be for the rest of his life..is that a possibility..I have tried searchin the web and can't find much information...I really appreciate any feedback from anyone out there...Thanks..God Bless everyone here...

Have they been able to culture it? If so, what type of bacteria was it?

Almost any infection has some possibility of getting into the bloodstream and causing sepsis, but if he's on IV antibiotics, they should kill anything getting into the bloodstream before it has a chance to become a real problem.

Has his immune system function been tested?

Does your husband remember the incident that caused the infection? You said that it is a marine infection. Was it caused by a fish bite or fin puncture or was he just on a boat a cut himself? Also what is the name of the antibiotics he is taking by IV and by mouth?

Hey thanks for responding they said the name of bacteria i don't recall it. They took him off iv meds..causing ringing in his ears..He is now on ethambutol, and rifampin..by mouth..his finger swelling has gone down and he is to start using that hand today..we have been married 27 years and now on the verge of a separation..i just need time away..it was bathing him from surgery which i have no problem taking care of him i love him but he bitches about everything..i am really trying...i have a bad feeling that it will swell up again now that he is using it..i will let you all know how it goes thanks for caring...God Bless

This is a website for people with rare diseases. We can't diagnose. I suggest talking to an infectious disease doctor. Your husband should have an infectious disease doctor as part of his medical team.

I KNOW which site I am on..My husband has an infectious dease dr...I have met wonderful people here..who i wanted feedback from...and I DO THANK them for their help..I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A DIGNOSIS.. I have been on this website for quite a while now...
