learning to write grants

Actually, I'm putting this question here because I don't know where else to put it. It doesn't really fit with the current subject headings - so if I could suggest a new subject catagory how about something like "tips and tricks for advocacy." This could include questions about running patient organizations, fundraising for your patient advocacy group, figuring out where to get your questions answered (as a group) in the medical establishment etc.

Like so many others, I've fallen into helping to run our patient advocacy group totally by accident. I have no training for this (other than a few classes and seminars I've done because I really want to learn.) I feel like our organization is at a big point of transition. We're moving from the kitchen table to being a bigger operation - and the growing pains are tough. One thing we need to do a better job at is writing grants. It's so hard when everyone's got a full time job and/or medical crisis etc. I'm hoping to take a class on grant writing from my local junior college but so far the offered times don't work in my schedule or transportation to class is a problem (I'm blind, so I don't drive.)

Is anyone aware of any online course for grant writing?

Another thing I've happened on is a program offered by the association for professional fundraisers whereby they've got volunteers to review grants and give you feedback. Trouble is I don't meet the criteria for membership and affording it would be a stretch anyway. This fundraising gig isn't exactly my career - at least not yet, but that's a story for another post. Does anyone know of any resources for grant writing coaching???

Thanks for any advice for someone just sticking her little toe into the grant writing waters.

I would love to train, although I have been doing this for many years I still do not feel qualified. Securing core funding is so hard - any tips anyone?

I just found out about an online grant writning course in my city. Here is the website and instructions: http://www.bpcc.edu; click on link to community education;(near the middle right; then scroll to bottom and click to on line courses, then click on education to go

I haven't gone to the website yet, but I plan to.

I sure hope this helps you.

There is a website called Tech Soup
http://www.techsoup.org If you organziation has a 501 c3 you can apply and get very large discounts of software and and programs for nonprofits....
The is a link buy a membership to GrantStation sometimes run even larger discounts... GrantStation membership is normally through techsoup $399.00 and just got it for $99.00. GrantStation when you just go to them directly is $599.00

Also I do not know if your patient advocacy organization has a Scientific Advisory Board. If you do, that is a great place to get help. Researchers working on the disease spend a great deal of time writing grants and if you make connections with them, they could review the grants you are writing. The thing with this is that you need to write the grant yourself and just have them give it the once over as they are very busy people....

I have written grants and done this with my organizations Scientific Advisory Board and the grants were funded, with just a little of their help.

Sarah

There are several courses offered online at Ed2Go, http://www.ed2go.com/cgi-bin/ed2go/newofferings.cgi?dept=GW

I also second the recommendation of Techsoup. It is an excellent resource.
