Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome.

I was Diagnosed in 2006 with this illness and have had a tough time. I was sent home from hospital on several occasions because it was 'a stomach bug'.
I continued being sick and going into what is called a 'conscious coma'. My temprature was never taken at home but i usually felt hot.

After being sent home a couple of times we decided i couldnt have a stomach bug EVERY time. we refused to leave without them finding what was wrong with me. I was kept in and put on IV fluids, Anti-sickness meds and pain meds. I was discharged a week later when my health went back completely normal. This is what happened nearly every time i had a attack.

In 2006 i was diagnosed with CVS when ECG's,EEG's,MRI's, X-rays's,Ultrasounds,Bloods,Urine and a Barium meal come back normal. At first we were happy to have a name for this illness but that was only the beginning of our worries.

We was going into hospital if we couldnt manage at home but each time i went in the harder it was to get IV access. I went in and out of comas and my heart rate was always fast. My temprature was always slightly high and i never responded to meds given except sedation.

Late last year the Drs. thought there was somthing more seriouse wrong with me because i was never getting better. They booked me to have a endoscapy done which came back normal and i also went to see a nuero Dr. which didnt help. I have just managed to break a cycle that was happening every 4 days for 5-6 days.

So far having CVS hasnt become more easyer to handle and im rarely well enough to enjoy the time. Further tests have come back normal and IV access has become virtually impossible. We are seeing a Dr. now about having a port placed but we are not getting anywhere fast.

What i really want is someone that can relate to my story that can offer advice on coping with this illness.

Hi there,
I am so sorry to hear about your trouble with CVS. I have had it for about 20 years. At first it was mild, then about 10 years ago the symptoms became more intense. Lots of nausea and vomiting, hospital stays every few weeks, always tired, etc.

I saw Dr. Edward Feldman at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He is a specialist in CVS. There are only a handful of doctors who treat CVS, let alone know about it. There are thousands of gastroenterologists who don't know what CVS is, therefore they don't know how to treat it. Before I saw Dr. Feldman, I was skeptical. But, after talking with him for over an hour, I saw how caring and knowledgable he is. In my book, he is at the top of the list. He speaks across the country to doctors about CVS, so that they would know what it is and how to help a patient with it.

He prescribed two meds for me to try: clonazepam and lorazepam. I had no idea that I had an extreme amount of anxiety until I took clonazepam for it. Wow, what a difference! Lorazepam is given for nausea to patients who are on chemo. Both meds, as well as Dr. Feldman, have literally changed my life! I still get nausea, but with the meds I am on I have not been admitted to the hospital, or even needed to see a doctor for over 3 years now. Wow!

I do avoid a lot of foods, such as those that are acidic and spicy. I don't eat lasagna, peppery seasoned foods, oranges, grapefruit, lemonade, etc. But, the payoff is totally worth it.

Dr. Feldman's info:
Edward J. Feldman, M.D.
telephone: (310)652-8031

He does not take insurance. But, he does make phone appointments and it might be possible that you would not need to travel to be treated by him. He also knows of reputable doctors throughout the country who are knowledgeable about CVS, and might be near you.

I hope that this helps you. Please let me know if I can do anything else to help you, and I would love to hear how things go for you.

Laura

I have herd lots about Dr.Feldman from CVSers. I am also a member on the CVSA forum and they all talk about Dr. Fleisher.

I live in England (London) and last november my mum went to the CVS family confrence and Dr. Fleisher was there to talk along with other CVS Drs.

At the moment i am seeing a CVS Dr. in St. mary's children hospital called Dr. Chong. He told me at my next admission Blood and Urine has to be sent to him where he will gwt it tested for other more seriouse illnesses then when he gets the results he will put me on Propanalol, that was in the beginning of June and i havent been ill since. I have had the odd be sick for a day or only vomit once but it hasnt stayed for the 5 days it usually stays for.

In a way im happy i havent been ill for so long although im always in a constant worry of being ill but then on the other hand i want to be ill so my tests get sent off and i can start the meds.

I have Lorazipam when im ill to be sedated but my body dont respond to it now and they refuse to up my dose. Instead i am given Cyclazine to put me to sleep and Ondansetron for the sickness. i am also on Amitryptaline and Pizotifen just to prevent the attack.

I am hoping to grow out of this although it seems people never fully grow out of it and are left with something like the nausea like you. I would prefurr to have the nausea instead of th actual vomiting.

The cycles have also ruined my sleep patton and although i try everything to change it (have only a few hours sleep) the patton always returnes. people alway say stay up for the whole 24 hours but for me tiredness is a trigger.

any solutions to returning my sleep patton again?
also i hope you and others with CVS stay cycle free.
