When were you put on bed rest?

I have had two other preemie's and am pregnant again. So far at 15 weeks my cervix is already shortened and I was wondering when did the Dr. put you on bed rest for an incompetent cervix?

sometimes you don't have to wait for your doctor to put you on bedrest - if you are concerned, put yourself on bedrest. I put myself on bedrest, b/c I was pregnant with twins and generally uncomfortable at 23 weeks. Good thing I did, I went into preterm at 25. My sister has IC , she was on bedrest almost the entire pregnancy, once it was diagnosed. You can ask your doctor, but if I had already had 2 preemies and was pregnant again, I wouldn't be getting off the couch except to pee! Just my opinion, though! Good luck!

I was going to say the same thing as mygirlsmom. Dont wait for the Dr to tell you. I'd put myself on bedrest. I was on moderate bedrest starting at 10wks with my last pregnancy and then restrictive bedrest at 15wks. I had my daughter at 27wks after PROM at 26wks. Do all you can do to help keep lil one in. As hard as it is to be on bedrest and have other children its the best thing you can do for yourself and baby. Your lil kids will understand and you can still spend quality time w/ them sitting in bed or on the couch reading books or coloring. My 3 other children did fairly well while I was on bedrest for those 17wks.

I was put one hospital bed rest at 22 weeks.

How short is your cervix? 15 weeks is very early for a cervix to shorten, I think you should be on complete bedrest. My cervix started to shorten at 13 wks 4 from 4cm to 2.5 cmdays (with twins) and I was placed on complete hospital bedrest for the duration of my pregnancy. Not trying to make you worry or scare you, but be your own advocate, get a second opinion if you dont agree with you Dr, or put yoursef on bedrest and demand ultrasounds with cervical measurements at least every other week. Also, do you have a cerclage? I hope so!!

My best wishes for you!

i'll be 20 wks on monday and i've been placed on bedrest since June 19th. i have an IC and a vaginal cerclage. my cervix got shorter, even after a weekend of bedrest. however, the cervix is very dynamic and can go from 3.5 to 1.5 and vice versa. but, i'm in agreement with the other moms. place yourself on bedrest. drink plenty of water and make sure you don't hold your pee. that's been the advice given to me by friends and by inspire moms. they are sooooo right! every little ache and pain i get concerned, but i just keep on staying in the bed with my feet up, not hanging over the bed and i drink lots of water everyday. i try to drink at least 80 oz a day. don't over drink at once, though. i go through a 16 oz bottle in an hour or 1 1/2 hour. best of luck! this support group is great!

I am 13 weeks, 5 days and delivered my last baby at 27 weeks. I got a cerclage two days ago and the doctor put me on bedrest right after the cerclage. He said my cervix is already shorter than the average cervix so he's concerned. Also, I'm a teacher so I do too much standing during the day anyway. Better safe than sorry later!

I was put on bedrest at 19 weeks after I was found to be funneled to the cerclage. I wish I would have listened to my gut and not the doctor. Violet may have stayed put a few weeks longer!

I am 15 weeks with a cerclage, my doctor put me on bed rest. My cervix isn't short but it was dialated to 3 but closed back up and then a cerclage was put in.

I know there are many factors that determine when a woman is put on bed rest, but figured I'd share what my doc told me about having a short cervix. A normal cervix is 4 to 5 cm in length. She said the docs will start keeping a close eye on you at 2.5 cm. That means additional ultrasounds and being aware of preterm labor contractions and other PTL symptoms. At 1.5 cm, they keep you at the hospital for a few days to determine if you need to stay at the hospital until you deliver or if they can send you home on meds and/or bedrest.
There's more info on cervical length and how it can predict preterm birth here: www.keepemcookin.com/prevention.aspx

Do you know the specific length of your cervix? Will you be getting the 17P (progesterone) injections?

I think that the injections and bed rest are what let me continue to carry my DS, even thought my cervix was 1.5 cm at 24 weeks. Keep us posted!

I was placed on modified bed rest at 4 weeks and full bed rest at 4 months with a cerclage, and the pregancy only lasted 6 months. For the last 2 months it was a hospitalized bed rest.

My doc didn't believe in bed rest. He was a jerk he said if your going to lose them there is nothing that can be done. I was preg with twins. Water broke at 19 weeks with Alexa and delivered at 23 weeks. Do what you feel needs to be done. I stayed home most of the time but one day got out and went shopping came home cooked dinner and then it happened my water broke. I wish I would have out myself on bedrest and my babies would be here today.

i've had 2 preemies, 2 termers, and 1 angel. i was put on full bedrest at 20 wks. i was also put on procardia and 17P injections. i was hospitalized one day shy of 28 wks and given mag and steroid shots. i am still in the hospital and they plan to keep me until delivery. my cervix was 3.3 at 15 wks, 2.9 at 22 wks, 1.75 at 26 wks, and last week (29 wks) it was 2.0. i'm also dilated to 1-2 and have ic and irritable uterus. i do not have a cerclage so they are being extra cautious with me.

good luck!

Don't wait for your dr to put you on bedrest. If your instinct tells you you need it, then follow that instinct. My dr's kept telling me that bedrest wasn't necessary, but my gut told me otherwise. I cut down my work days and put a couch in my work office so that I could do most of my work horizontal. Once home, I was horizontal on the couch and only got up to use the bathroom. My instinct proved right, because at 24 weeks, my cervix was down to 1.5 and then quickly went to nothing. They put me on hospital bedrest and I made it to 31 wks. In hindsight, it scares me to think of what would have happened had I not followed my instinct! Better safe than sorry, so be as conservative as you can possibly be. Good luck!
