Weight gain during pregnancy

0 Recommendations

My doctor told me gain about 25-30 lbs. but I still have a solid 20 lbs. left over from my son! I've been working out on occasion (I've been bad about it lol) and eating healthy and smaller meals and snacking more frequently. So I haven't gained any weight yet and I'm almost 16 weeks, not a single pound, which I'm very proud about because at my last ultrasound she said the baby was measuring 3 days larger =) I know they said weight loss during pregnancy is unhealthy, but do you think it would be still okay if I only gained 15 lbs? I figure I would have to loose extra fat from my son to only gain 15 lbs.

Has anyone else hardly gained anything during pregnancy if you have extra fat aka overweight? I just don't believe my doctor when she says I should still gain 25-35...that's for average weight, I have like a BMI of 26.5.

Alright any insight on this would be great, thanks!

Exercise Pregnancy Stress

I hear of a lot of moms stressing weight gain during pregnancy. Many other quad moms I have talked to say their drs want them to gain 75lbs on average, yes they are carrying 4 babies, but still a little dramatic if you ask me. I only gained about 35lbs with mine and didnt stress calories, the weight melted off as soon as I delivered. I ate when I wanted but didnt worry about gaining a certain amount of lbs. I think as long as sonos show baby is growing healthy, but im no dr!

Your baby is going to take from you what it needs. Some ppl dont gain a lot of weight w/ pregnancy. I gained 7lbs w/ my last pregnancy which ended at 27wks and that was w/ 17wks of bedrest. I thought I would have gained a ton more because of my inactivity. I noticed w/ my back to back pregnancy that I didnt gain much weight either. I figure maybe it was because I did have the lil extra weight from the previous pregnancy and my body was already in the prego mode.

I think your doing what is right. Eat healthy and light exercise is best; your body will do what it needs to.

I gain a lot when pg, no doubt. But my BMI is only 16.9 so Im considered underweight. I just tried to eat healthy and my body did what it needed to. I gained 21 lbs with my first (born at 35 weeks) then 40 lbs with my second (born at 35.5 weeks) then 24 lbs with my third (born at 33 weeks ) and with my last I gained 33 lbs (born at 32 weeks.)

Is there some reason why you don't trust your doctor? Perhaps you should get a second medical opinion if you don't trust her.

I am overweight...and 16 weeks...and I have lost a total of 10 pounds so far...and my drs are not concerned at all. As long as the baby is growing and healthy, I don't suspect that they will say anything!

No I do trust my doctor I just think she's underestimated my BMI. Ya the baby is growing great, actually better than Matteo did when I gained a ton of weight!

My understanding is that every pregnancy is totally different, and each body reacts differently, and it reacts differently to each pregnancy. Back in the 70's when I was born, weight gain was a big deal, and it was tracked very closely. Now, the health of the child is not solely based on weight gain, but a million other factors. Some women gain 15 pounds during an entire pregnancy, others gain 70 (as I did over 30 weeks with twins and Pre-E.) 25-35 is average. I would just talk to your OB and see if she has an opinion on your weight gain at this point. If she is concerned, than maybe you try to add some additional and yet healthy calories. It's amazing to me how totally differently each person and each body reacts to pregnancy. I'm glad to hear your baby is doing so well.

In my first pregnancy I gained 14 lbs and the second I gained 40. Both times my doctor recommended 25-30 lbs even starting both pregnancies overweight. The first time around I was very sick the first 20 weeks and lost about 10lbs. I ate and ate and couldn't gain. I went on bedrest at 26 weeks and I delivered at 33 weeks. My daughter was just under 4lbs which is a good size for that gestation. The second pregnancy, I had lost the previous baby weight but was still overweight to begin with. I was again put on bedrest at 26 weeks (weird, I know). I made it to 37 weeks 5 days. I think the last 10 lbs I gained were probably fluid from the pre-e. My son weighed just under 7lbs, again good size for the gestation.

I guess my point is, you do what you can to eat right and be healthy. Each pregnancy is different. I would not restrict your calorie intake just because you are afraid of gaining weight. The guidelines are set to promote optimal fetal health and fat reserves for nursing.

Now that I am done nursing my son, I am having a much easier time shedding the baby weight. I am also now chasing two toddlers, so I rarely actually get to eat a meal before I am running again.

At 16 weeks, the need for weight gain is negligible. You don't usually need to start gaining until the second trimester and through the third you should be gaining steadily as the baby's needs increase.

The only circumstances I have heard of where doctors recommended less weight gain (less than 25 lbs) was for someone morbidly obese and that is done under close supervision.

I hope that helps.
