Teething?

I have a 24 weeker who is now a little over 6 months. He is 2 1/2 months adjusted. He is my first child. From everything I can tell he has the signs of teething, yet it is a little early for that in his adjusted age. I am wondering if anyone's preemie may have started teething early or is there another problem I should be considering?

just noticed your concern on here and thought I would comment back to you a/b it since I know EXACTLY what you're experiencing. I also have a 24 weeker, and she's now just 8 months old (adjusted age is 4 months). But I've noticed that she has been drooling & chewing since she was around 2 months old (adjusted age). So 2 months have passed for us, and she still hasn't had any teeth pop through, but I have to say that what you're experiencing w/ your son definately would be teething also. I asked my daughter's doc about it and he said that its not uncommon for babies to start teething even at a MONTH old (full term or preemies). But just be patient, Im sure there's nothing to be concerned about. But I just wish that my daughter would have something coming through anytime now b/c its been 2 months she's been experiencing it. Hopefully I gave you some positive info and a heads up on what you were concerned about.

My 26 weeker started having teething symptoms at about 6 months. It was almost 3 months after that though before his first tooth actually finally broke thru. I remember I often doubted if he was teething or if something else was going on becauase it took so long to actaully see anything other than the outward symptoms of drooling and chewing on everything possible. He is 15 months (today actually) and I think he's starting to get his molars because all the old symptoms are back.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi there,

Evan started doing the same thing at around 5 months actual 2 months corrected. He is now 11 months actual 6 corrected and is just now showing white spots. We were also concerned because of all the drooling. His pediatrician believed it was just a 'preemie thing'. I'm now convinced it was teething. Now we have to put a glove on his right hand just so he won't gag himself or scratch his gums since he always is chewing on his hand. He still can't hold on to teething ring yet so his hand is his favorite comfort thing.

This is so funny....I took my 33 weeker, 3 months now (7 weeks adjusted) to the doctor because I was worried about some little noise she was making (I am paranoid)...anyway..there was nothing wrong with her but my ped told me that my little angel was TEETHING. So just know that babies can begin teething at anytime. My ped even said that some babies are born with teeth.

Is it ok to use baby orajel at this time? Or should I wait until the teeth start breaking through?

Hi, My Norah, 6 months, 4+ adjusted has been drooling and chewing since she found her fingers. No teeth yet but her jaws sure are getting strong!!!!! About the pain... someone posted something the other day about filling bottle nipples w/ water and freezing them, then attaching the bottles for the baby to hold and suck the frozen nipple to ease the pain. The little bit of water the baby would get should not be a problem.

It is so funny you asked this. I logged in looking for another early teether. My whole family says I'm crazy, there was no way our 5 month old (2 adjusted) was teething. She chews on her hand all the time, loves anything cold in her mouth, you can even see where the little teeth are going to be. I'm glad to know our baby isn't doing anything out of the ordinary.

My son is showing sysmptoms of teething as well. He was 31 weeks ( is now almost 2 months adjusted). He has been showing signs, ie: drooling, chewing on clothing, blankets, anything he can get his mouth on. We have tried the teething rings and some baby tylenol at the direction of our pediatrician and it seems to work. I have felt his gums alot but nothing is showing or trying to break through. I am going to an appointment on the 31st. I am going to ask about orajel and will post my findings.

Hi. My Lucas was 28-31 weeks gestation. Now at almost 11 mo actual he has 6 teeth. The bottom front teeth came together on March 24 a week before he turned 7 months actual. He had been showing signs of teething for about 6 weeks before that. The best thing I found for him was a washcloth pretzel. You take a damp baby washcloth, twist it into a pretzel and freeze. It gave him more relief than the comercial teethers and was less messy. He would chew then suck for a few drops of water. With the comercial teethers he would drool like crazy and before he was ready to stop they would be warm. Also the washclothes are cheaper. I did occationaly use baby orajel (some relief) but don't do it near a feeding. It numbs everything it touches including the throat which can make swallowing hard. I hope this helps. Good Luck! Amy
