swimming pools?

Hi all,

My daughter is 14months adj. (17mnths. actual). She was on the ventilator for 5 days and cpap for a week and a half.
My question may be silly but I was wondering if any of you have taken your babies/toddlers swimming and if you know if the chlorine has or had any effect on them?
Me and my husband love to swim every summer but I am worried if the chlorine could cause lung problems or asthma. My daughter doesn't have another doctors app. until August.
Any info would be great.
Thanks to all,
Kimberly

sorry guys,

I meant for this one to be in growing up/education?

Hi Kimberly -
I had my twins (30 weekers) in the pool a couple of weeks ago at 4.5 mos adjusted. The pool I took them in wasn't overly chlorinated - it's an outside pool and I didn't have them in very long, but they loved it. I would stay away from an indoor pool since the chemicals are more contained, but if the pool isn't too chlorine-y smelling, it's probably fine.

My instinct is that since I've never heard anything at all cautioning against it, it's probably fine. However, it's certainly an interesting question. I would give the doctor a call.

definately stick to outdoor pools I took mine to an indoor pool and they broke out from all the chemicals being so strong and the smell of chlorine would knock your socks off

I have heard to keep them away from indoor pools because the smell of chlorine can be overwhelming. Sometimes it is for me too! I have taken my daughter swimming in our outdoor pool and she did fine, at about 2 months adjusted

Thank you for your replies,

I think I will stick to outdoor pools. My husband has been wanting to take her to our neighborhood pool but we have not done so yet. We will probably take her tomarrow and see how she does. The chlorine is not overwhelming at all so I think I'll just keep an eye on her. Glad to hear it's not been a problem for some of your babies thats been enjoying a little water play! :)

Thanks, Kimberly

Hi:

My 25 weeker who is know 20 months, start a month ago swimming classes whith the EI team, basically they just sign to babies and play whith them, my baby loves it.

Before i took her to the pool, i ask her pulmonology, even that her lungs are not an issue, i just want to be sure. He told that is the best excersice for premmie, with lung issues and without, basically my baby has low muscle tone, and everytime she move her legs or her arms, you can see the effort she is doing to move them coordinated, she takes also the classes whith 2 OT, and they are great also.

If you are afraid talk to your doctor, is better to feel confortable in the pool and enjoy this whith them.

Good Luck

My son was a 28 weeker who is now 2 yrs and doing well and is a water baby. He loves our pool and any water.

When he came home it was June and very hot so we didnt take him outside except on the patio which had a fan and was cooler and he was on an Apnea Monitor so we couldnt put him in the water anyway.

I was more worried about sun burn than chorine.

Once he was 10 months adjusted the pool was warm again and the weather nice and we took him in the pool everyday and still do. He has no problems with the Cholrine in our pool or public pools, though if the water is not crystal clear we dont go in. Most of the area pools have water play areas for toddlers and he did fine.

I would assume Chorine would only pose problems if a child or adult inhaled cholrine fumes directly out of the container. We actually tried something else in our pool but went back to chlorine since it worked better.

I was worried about lung problems but I have not found any mention of Chlorine when searching articles and information so I dont think it is a problem and other premies born at the same gestational age dont have any problems.

My son, is a former 29-weeker 7mths actual (5 mths. adjusted) just started swimming lessons in an indoor pool. It is helping him with his coordination, loosening his muscles and he is actually trying to start crawling. The chlorine level in the pool was not that significant. He did great. I gave him a shower at the pool site immediately after he got out. He did not have any rashes or breakouts of any kind. I did request that the instructor give me the amount of the specific chemicals that they used in the pool. If nothing else, it is reat therapy for preemies, I think.

Hi everyone!

I had the same concern for my former 26 weeker who is now 1 year old. Then I came a across a medical study (I think it was done in Sweden) just recently where they found a connection between asthma in infants and toddlers exposed to indoor pools. I am holding off for now till I can talk to my pulmonologist about it since my son has BPD and is already predisposed to getting asthma (may or may not). Maybe you could try googleing for the study to help you in your decision process.

well if this helps my 25 weeker came home in may of this year and in the weekend of july 4th she went in the pool at 8 pounds, with her oxygen tube and all... she loved it, but my sister in law did not add much chlorine and checked the levels for us. She did great and did not have any problems. talk to your pediatrician.
