Sucking bottle

0 Recommendations

My son, now 10 months (8 months actual) was born at 31 weeks. He has silent reflux, has had pnemonia 3 times, broncholitus twice and is on meds for his reflux. For some time now he hasn't drank his bottle nicely and noticed that the only way I could get him to drink his bottle was to actually cut the teat in a x shape to allow the milk to flow. He doesn't suck, just moves his tongue up and down instead. Have any of you had problems with sucking? Please share your experience and tell me what they did to fix it.

I have not had problems with dd's sucking. The only thing I can think of is tougue tie. I have only heard of this recently and have no if that might be the problem. I think it's when the tongue is attatched to the mouthfloor. You can have it fixed by a dr, they just cut the tongue loose. I do know that it hinders their speech and later they have problems with texured food. So maybe you can talk to your pead about that????

Sorry if this is not helping.

My daughter is now 17months she was born at 32 weeks, she STILL has sucking difficulties! I'm getting told "it will come along when she's ready, she is a preemie these are things to expect" and I for one am sick of hearing it...I feel like I'm being told this because they don't know? We also cut slits into her nipples you aren't the only one. We know she is very hungry but it seems she just gets "too tired" to finish...yes the slits make it a bit faster flow but even the fast flow nipples were too slow it seemed? Her PT said awhile back that she would bring over a "huggy bear" some sort of cup you cannot order only gotten through special resources..it looks like a sippy cup only its squeezable sorta like a juice box? it's supposed to deliver a bit of liquid and teach them to drink. I don't know about what you think of this but you could ask...are you getting Early Intervention for your child? I'd like to add you as well if that's ok with you :)

I have this problem with my son. He moves his tongue up and down too.

The way to tell if he is tongue tied is to look under his tongue at the very front. If the tip of the tongue is fastened down real close they can snip it real easy. I had two and two grandsons who had to have theirs fixed. My husband had his fixed as a child also. This will cause sucking problems and speech problems if it is bad enough.

Is he teething? Sucking is quite painful. When Lucas was teething he would bnever get a good seal around the nipple of the bottle. He would be hungry and try sucking but without a seal..as a result he wouldn't get any formula.
