Sucessful pregnancy after pPROM?

0 Recommendations

I lost my son to complications due to being born 14 weeks too soon. I experienced pPROM at 24 weeks and gave birth at 26 + 3 days. The doctors say that it was not an I/C and strictly a pPROM due to infection. Has anyone had a sucessful second pregnancy with pPROM? I understand that my chances for having another preemie has increased...I don't understand why though. I have a "consultation" on Monday to talk to a High Risk OB..any suggestions on questions I should ask? Any help would be appreciated.

Im so sorry for your loss.

I had pPROM at 33 weeks with my third baby. She was born that day and the pathology on the placenta came back pos for an infection called chorioamnionitis. With my fourth baby I again had pPROM. This time it was at 31 5/7 weeks. I stayed pregnant 5 more days, and the pathology this time was negative for infection. The doctor thought I had chorioamnionitis again but the IV antibiotics stopped it before delivery.

I seen a high risk OB as well as a preinatologist. There really isnt much they can do to prevent pPROM other than watch closley. The odds are in your favor to have a helathy full term baby. Good luck!!

I had a healthy baby after pPROM. I was given the 17p shots and watch very closely. It might be a good idea to talk to your doctor about the shots. My first born, my daughter, was born at 34 weeks after my water breaking at 32. My second child, my son, was born at 36 weeks and was able to come home with us from the hospital.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I am certainly grateful to all of the research and new developments that allowed me to go all the way with my little boy!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss. I had PROM at 23 weeks, and delivered my son at 24 weeks and 3 days (1 pound 1 ounce). He is now 2 years old (20 months adjusted). We don't know why I had PROM--infection was present in the placenta, however there's no way to know if it was there before the PROM (ie. caused it) or a result of the PROM (from infection ascending from everything being open after PROM).

I just delivered a full term (actually late 41 weeks) 9 pound 3 ounce baby. I was on progesterone supplements from the start-until week 36. It is a bit controversial (my doctor thinks I would have gone full term without it)--but I believe it made a difference (and would recommend it as there isn't any negative side effects that I know about?). I was also told I had about 25% chance of PROM happening again--so I prayed really hard around week 23 and onwards. Any week past 24 was a blessing to me-- so I was thrilled to make it to 40 weeks.

Good luck and I hope you have the same success as I did.

I am so sorry for your loss.
I had pPROM at 34 weeks with my first, but she was 6lbs 10oz and was only in the NICU for about a day to stabilize her blood sugars....with #2 I went full term with no complications only 5 days early...with #3 I had pPROM at 33 weeks and delivered him very quickly that same day, about 3 hours after my water broke...and with #4 my water never broke, but he came at 32 weeks due to a whole list of complications! I do have a bicorunate uterus which is a huge reason why I have premature babies, and I had a good portion of my cervix removed due to cancer, so my cervix is about half the length it should be even before pregnancy, I also have a CHD, and the list goes on. I was told at a very young age that I would not be able to have kids, but I guess 4 babies later i proved them wrong lol!!

Hi first off I'm terribley sorry for your loss there is nothing wors than lossing your child.I had prom at 17 weeks and carried my daugter to 31 weeks. We were really blessed and despite the odds she is perfect. Mine was due to a tear in the placenta and they think the blood clot tore the amniotic sac. I think the best advice I can give you is to write all of your questions down no matter how basic they may seem just incase you experience a well of emotions when you get to the doctors office. I would also take notes at the doctors office. I have read that once you have prom that you have a 30% chance of going through it again. I would ask what kind of prenatal care you would need, and what the risks are of reaccurance. Even knowing the risk I would do it again, I just have to convince my fiance.Good luck on Monday

My first was the only one I didn't have PPROM with. My second I had PPROM at 28 weeks, delivered at 29 weeks 4 days. My 3rd I had PPROM at 34 weeks 4 days and delivered that day.

Maddensmom,

Let me begin by saying I'm sorry for your loss... I lost my firstborn due to complications of pPROM at 26 weeks- he and his twin brother (pictured above) were born at 28 weeks, 3 days.

They can find absolutely no reason other than infection; but (like lilfiery said above) which came first, an infection which caused the PROM, or an infection caused by the PROM?

It drives me nuts that there's so little knowledge about this! (I've read that 70% of neonatal death is due to complications of pPROM, though less than 1% of babies develop sepsis, which is primarily what my son died of...)

I am currently 24 weeks pregnant (unexpectedly!), and to say I'm nervous is putting it mildly. I've had every test known to man done, and I'm not even being told to do anything differently: both my OB and my high-risk doc say this is a completely different situation -not a twin pregnancy, for one- and because I didn't have I/C they're just watching me carefully.

Honestly, I don't know if you're a candidate for P-17 shots; it's controversial as to whether they really help or not (in cases like ours, in particular). I've heard of monitoring for infection, but one of the ways they do it is by doing an amnio (which by itself can cause PROM!).

I'm sure that you, like I, would "bend over backward" to keep pregnant for longer-- so look into any and all possibilities, regardless!!!

Best wishes-- and if you learn anything, please let me know!!

(Mom to ^Jonathan^, Joshua - 22 months, Jaydan = 23 weeks, 6 days!!)

Hi Kyrsten:

your situation sounds very close to mine (minus the twin part) if not identical. I am going to ask about the P-17 shots along with multiple other questions that they might or might not be able to answer. I am curious though...did you opt for the amnio? I am concerned about it causing pProm. I understand we have to weigh out the pro's and con's but I am so confused with this because of all the unknown that I don't know if it would be better to have the amnio done or not.

I will keep you in my thoughts for a healthy and full term pregnancy. Keep in touch. I will let you know on Monday what the doctor has to say.

Congrats on your pregnancy!!

I had pPROM at 25wk4d and delivered at 26wk1day. My son is now 16 months old (13 adjusted), and doing remarkably well. We were very lucky w/him. I am now 14wks pregnant w/our 2nd baby. I started w/Crinone progesterone gel from conception to 10 wks (not due to pPROM but other conception issues). Starting next wk, they will measure cervix length every other week. I start 17P at 16wks and will get that every week until 36 or 38wks. I saw the hi risk doc before getting pregnant again. and this is the course he recommended. If you had a c-sec I would also ask your doc about VBAC (some doctors do them; others don't). Good luck - it's a scary journey, but well worth it in the end.

I know, I'm really confused as to how doctors think an amnio would reassure a mom who's had pPROM before!!! --but that's exactly what several websites recommend in subsequent pregnancies.

We didn't do amnio last time, and definitely not this time-- for the reason that I'd rather not take that chance!!!

I'm reading all these posts about everyone taking p-17 shots; and yet two different doctors said they'd rather not do p-17 shots with me. Everyone keeps saying this is a singleton pregnancy, so I'm going to be OK.

I wish I had their confidence! I'm 24 weeks, and increasingly nervous... I'm not doing *anything* different this time around, and all I keep thinking about is that I had two check-ups just days before my water broke last time... They didn't "catch" it then, how can they catch it if it happens again?

Has anyone else been in this situation (subsequent pregnancy- no changes made in procedure?)?

UPDATE on my doctors appointment -
Hi! Just wanted to share my doctors appointment on Monday..so I went and the Peri said that they think (he used the word "think" alot assuming to cover his butt) he said that they think that the reason that my bag ruptured was due to infection, an infection called ureaplasma. They think that I have this bacteria and it creeped up and weakened my bag which caused it to break and the rest is history. He said that he can treat me for it with antibiotics but it comes and goes so I would have to be tested every 2 weeks for it. He said that its a hard bacteria to get rid of and the antibiotics might not be able to get rid of it 100% but they would be able to bring down some of the micro-organizms. He thought I would be able to have a "good" pregnancy. What is good to him? I go back on the 18th to give a sample and see what they come out with..I am absolutley terrified. But I am 37, 38 in November. So basically Sh** or get off the pot.

Anyone ever heard or delt with Ureaplasma?

Hi, I was wondering what kind of tests the dr did to find out that it was ureaplasma?

They took a sample from my sons lungs and it came back positive. With me..I am not convinced that I have it to be honest! They take a sample from my Vagina and send it off to the lab. I haven't been tested positive yet. They are assuming since Madden had it. I am currently 8 weeks pregnat now and visited my dr on Monday. So far so good!

MaddensMom,
thank you for your reply. I'm very sorry for your loss and excited about your current pregnancy. We lost our little girl just over a year ago at 19weeks due to PPROM. There was an infection but like some of the others were saying, not sure if it was the cause of the rupture or if the rupture caused the infection.

I just recently found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant and I'm very excited but so very scared and nervous of it happening again. I see the dr next week and I'm already making a list of questions as to how things will be done differently this time.

Good luck to you on a healthy and successful pregnancy!!!!!

That might be one of the bacteria that causes bacterial vaginosis?? You might find info on it if you search under that name instead. I was tested several times for BV but always came up negative and my dr doesn' t believe that it is really a cause of premature births in most cases. I think that he also said the antibiotics to get rid of it can also cause preterm births and other issues so you might want to ask the dr about that.

I too did progesterone with my second pregnancy (not p17 here but another type), my first was prom at 27wks delivered a few hrs later. No signs of infection, but I had been on antibiotics for 2wks already due to a respiratory infection. In my case it turned out to be preterm labour that had caused the prom and so we were justified in using the progesterone.
Progesterone is used mainly for people who have or might have had preterm labour. In your case if you were in the hospital for a few wks before you delivered and they saw no contractions on a monitor then you are pretty much in the clear there and they might have no reason to use it for you. They also use it if you have a short cervix sometimes (also me) which is not the same as IC.
Good luck! My second arrived at 37wks after preterm labour and hospitalization at 30wks.

I have recently suffered a loss due to Prom. I was 17 and 3/4th weeks along and My water broke. I was Visiting New York City and so I was taken to NYU. I delivered my baby about 7 hours after my water broke. My baby was a still born. My Husband wants us to try again but I am terrified. Our daughter was born a Preemie at 27 weeks and was hospitalized for 7 weeks in the NICU. She is now 4 and a half and so healthy. I am just wondering what are the odds of getting prom again. The Dr at NYU ordered several tests and an autopsy so I am hoping to find out what caused it to begin with. I am just struggling every day trying to find some sort of hope for the future.

I haven't visited this site in 10 months because my husband and I became pregnant with our 2nd child. I was fearful of "learning more" that would scare me to death while carrying this child. So needless to say, I stayed away. BUT, I would like to give some hope to many of us that felt hopeless and continue to feel hopeless.

As you might have read, I lost my 1st son due to PPROM. My bag ruptured on week 24 and he was delivered on week 26, survived in the NICU for 51 days then returned to heaven where he was original sent from. This was on August 15, 2008.

My husband and I hesitantly became pregnant with our 2nd child in February. We were terrified but we needed to try for our family.

Needless to say we delivered our 2nd son on 10.28.09 at 39 weeks 1 day. My pregnancy was mentally challenging (that is an understatement) but physically uneventful.

Keep the faith for all of us that struggle with the loss or birth of a child due to PROM, there is hope.

maddensmom-
What wonderful news. I am so very happy to hear that your pregnancy was so boring!
Blessings to you and the new addition.
Kristen

I had PPROM with my first at 24 weeks and went into preterm labor and delivered at 25. I also had a placental abruption at around 20 weeks, which is what they think caused the PPROM. Since I didn't have spontaneous PTL, we opted not to do the 17P shots with our next baby. I had her at 38 1/2 weeks after a fairly uneventful pregnancy. :)

Hi, everyone. This message is for Tiffanyk:

I saw your post a few days ago, and I am so very sorry for your loss. I wanted to let you know about this post I just saw from an OB about preventing PROM in future pregnancies. There is hope, if you do decide to try again. http://bit.ly/11O1Ln
